Q: Bento doesn't work under yosemite!

As per my previous post, Bento 3 works fine (including sharing a database over a network) on Yosemite public beta 2 (sharing over a network does NOT work on public beta 3 and later, including the final version).  (I find that Yosemite public beta 2 works fine for me (apart from this problem: if you open a Pages document (and I think any document created by any program that uses the Modern Document Model) on a network volume, the icon of the network volume would appear multiple times on your desktop; I think the final version may have this problem too but I have yet to test it.))

I have Bento working fine with Yosemite.  The only thing is to use the default file location for the bento.bentodb file - I had previously stored this in dropbox but Bento hangs on opening in Yosemite if I use anything other than the default file location.  I can still sync my iPhone/iPad which both have IOS 8.

rgc35 - you are one of the lucky ones.  I also have it working on my MacBook Air, but it absolutely refuses to work on my iMac - which is where I used it most.  Now I'm forced to get the laptop out anytime I want to refer to or work on my database.  I never moved my db file anywhere besides the standard location.  I've tried opening a backup file, and I even tried downloading Bento again from the Filemaker site.  Nothing works.  I think I'll be spending some time figuring out if TapForms will work for me as well as Bento did so I can have it on all my computers and devises.

Yes Bento does work fine for me in Yosemite if I use a new blank database.  The problem is trying to open my previous (current) database from Mavericks.  It hangs and doesn't load even after 30min/catnap disabled.  Has anyone found a way to open a Bento 4.1.2 Database from Mavericks in Yosemite?  Someone mentioned there is a problem between the contacts and calendar portion of the database and if there were no entries here it would still work.  If this is true (I have entries in both but could do without either) how could I delete these entries in my Database in Mavericks, Save it, and then try to open it again in Yosemite.  To make things more complex I do use Dropbox to keep my current database current between computers.  Does anyone have this working?    Thanks so much to all for this thread and hopefully someone can get this working as I do want to update to Yosemite on my main computer!

I was able to back-up Bento from one computer with Maverick's and restore it to another running Yosemite.  I have yet to attempt a sync from an iDevice to the restored version.  Anyone?

And lastly when I added and new iPad with iOS 8.2 and Bento 4.1.2 and tried to sync with Bento on Yosemite I was able to bi-directionally.  Good to go as far as I can see.  Now I plan to do my live system.

You're one of the the lucky ones.  Bento works fine on my MacBook Air, but refuses under any circumstances to open on my 2010 iMac.  I've given up on it and moved on to Tap Forms.  I don't want to invest any more time on something that might quit working after the next update.  I like how Tap Forms syncs through iCloud to all my devises, but there are definitely a few of Bento's features missing.  However, they're still developing it, and I believe it will eventually out shine Bento.

Good point.  I did my tests on MacBook Air.  I have a newer Mac Mini and I know there are issues with older Macs in that some features won't work.

i have a 27" imac i7 with bento 4.1.2.  yosemite works terribly, but bento works just fine. 

I have a late 2009 iMac running 10.10.1 and Bento 4.1.2.  I use Bento with Mac Contacts and the old database would not open.  I quickly opened a new database and the address book (Contacts) information was there.  I can use the database but some things hang.  For instance, I tried to create a smart collection and it hung.  I tried to create a collection and it hung.  However, I was able to create a collection from a selection.  I find it very sad that Apple breaks useful software with its system updates and does not publish a list of what will be broken.  I also find it sad that Filemaker does not at least keep Bento 4.1.2 running on new Apple upgrades.  Bento did all the database things that I needed at home and I certainly am not buying Filemaker Pro for home use.

I had a similar problem today. I have a late model 2009 MacBook Pro with Bento 4.1.2. and just upgraded to Yosemite a couple of weeks ago.

When I first tried to run Bento after the Yosemite upgrade, I did have some really long load times - but that improved.

I do get a message occasionally that states ""atos needs to take control of another process for debugging to continue.  Type your password to allow this." I've done it - and had no trouble running Bento, even syncing w/ my iPhone and iPad. After getting this message I researched what it meant and saw that Mac is telling customers that Bento is no longer supported under Yosemite.

I can't say I had any trouble with functionality until today when I tried to edit a smart collection. When I selected "edit smart collection" I just got a rainbow ball that kept spinning and when I went to "force closed" it said Bento wasn't responding.

When I first heard FileMaker wasn't going to support Bento anymore last year, I tried out the Migration Tool to Filemaker and did the Filemaker Pro Trial - and I just wasn't happy. I've used Filemaker Pro in the past for business... and it was fine when I needed the horsepower. But what I use Bento for now, I don't NEED the power of Filemaker Pro - and Filemaker Pro is NOT user-friendly or even visually attractive like Bento. Bento was in my price range and perfect for my everyday needs and I did use it everyday. I'm not a business that needs a complicated database program like Filemaker Pro - and I don't want to spend that much money for tools that I don't want and/or need.

So, it is more than a little disappointing when Apple & Filemaker Pro decide to basically break what wasn't broken. This is no small fix on my end. Now I have to spend my time finding and learning a new program. I had been a faithful Bento client. Purchased all the Bento upgrades for my laptop, iPad & iPhone and I would gladly be willing to buy another upgrade if they would keep supporting it. I feel massively let down by Apple and Filemaker Pro. I was a good customer and feel my loyalty and my value of my time has been completely disregarded.

.... and don't even get me started on how angry I am about Aperture... I lost hundreds of hours of editing and keywording when I transitioned from Aperture to Lightroom. Wish I never met Aperture... it was a massive waste of my time.

Thanks for all your input. Looks like Bento works for some and not others, even with simular set up.

I've just run Carbon Copy Clone to clone my start-up drive and sometime between the holidays make the plunge to Yosemite.

I have also used the Filemaker Bento converter to convert my DB just in case, and I also plan on looking seriously int Tapforms if I have real issues. I think they have a converter that I'll run too prior to update. Then update to Yosemite and hope for the best and expect the worse.

As others have mentioned, Filemaker is just to much DB for me as well as to expensive and I am really sad that with all the apps in the world that there are so few options for something as basic as a database app for the mac. Bento really was a nice program and even looked good.

Hi Everyone.

I finally installed/updated my computer to os 10.10.1 today. For me I have good news: Bento 4.1.2 seems to work just fine with my 4000 record DB after the upgrade. Adding a new contact to Apple Contacts also adds that to Bento, so they are talking to each other. It may be a bit more sluggish than in Mavericks, but so am I now that I am decades old.

My DB is a very simple name, address, Notes, and a few other custom text fields. I view my DB in list view 100% of the time and have no templates, or know what they even do.

Before I did the update, I covered my a** and did the following:

1) Made a clone of start up drive using Carbon Copy cloner, in case NOTHING worked.

2) Created an Apple Contacts (Address Book) Archive.

3) In Bento I created/exported (a) Bento Template of my DB- to be used with Tapforms in case Bento did not work, I would switch to that for $30.00 (b) an Excel file, and (c) a Text file. So I really covered all options. I also saved a copy of the BentoDB file.

I still may switch to Tapform sooner than later, they were most responsive to my many questions and quite honestly after playing with the demo is certainly worth the small price. The only downside is that it doesn't sync with Contacts/Addressbook, at least yet I don't think.

I figured if I had a back up plan really thought out, I might get lucky and Bento would chug along, and today that is the case.

Try the link on the Filemaker page for education and non-profit organisations: go to the Purchase tab then the "individual downloads" box then "go to education and non-profit" just to the left of the country flag at the top right - less than $200. But I'm hesitating - I'm about to get Yosemite - I have Mavericks and Bento 4.1.2 works on that as far as I can tell - I haven't actually used it on it in earnest. But I also have an older machine with Snow Leopard and Bento 4.1.2, however it asks for my registration key and I seem to have lost it, assuming it must have been sent by email, however I certainly never deleted such an email message.
