The computer runs fine under Mavericks, leading me to conclude this is a Yosemite issue, not a general/software/slowdown issue.

Oct 21, 2014 11:12 AM in response to Adam Wolkoffby Adam Wolkoff,An update:
I made another attempt at installing yosemite. I wiped the drive and did a fresh install, then used migration assistant.
The end result was the same. The system ran fine at first, then bogged.
A reboot made it better, then after sleeping the system bogged again.
I am back to Mavericks pending some resolution.
