Links not Working in Safari after Yosemite Upgrade

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I have noticed some problems with specific websites (si.com and macworld.com) while using Safari. Since upgrading, clicking on links on either site does nothing. I can right-click and open the link in a new tab, but a direct click causes nothing to happen. After verifying that it was not my installed extensions, I found an old answer that suggested disabling Javascript. Disabling Javascript appeared to resolve the issue.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues? If so, were you able to resolve without disabling Javascript? Is this an issue in Safari or something on the websites' side?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi ..

Might be a cookies or cache issue.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.

Click: Remove All Website Data

Then delete the cache.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for the suggestions. I had previously tried enabling/disabling my extensions (I only have two 1Password and ClickToPluggin). Enabling/Disabling the extensions, one at a time and both at the same time did not resolve the issue. I neglected to mention that I had also previously clicked the Remove All Website Data button, however, I never deleted the Cache.db. This time, I did both (in the order you prescribed), but it did not resolve the issue either.

The only thing that seems to work is disabling Javascript...

My router is also a linksys. I did a firmware update last night, which did not solve the issue. I did find this thread, though and I will try this when I get home. Re: Some links don't work in Safari. For example the top grey buttons on apple.com don't work unless I option click and select "open in new tab", in fact I had to do this for five links to get to this page, what is wrong?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

I'm having this problem too. Most notably Facebook and google mail, but its affecting all sites to some extent. Everything was perfect with Mavericks, updated to Yosemite and bam, browsing is impossible. I've been through several hours of troubleshooting with Apple support, no joy so far and I'm pretty sure the next step is a full hard drive wipe which I am reluctant to do.

I'm having the exact same problem with Safari, though I had it prior with Mavericks as well as continuing to have it with Yosemite. First noticed it in Yahoo Groups and macworld.com, where I would have to ctrl-click and open the links in a new tab. Very frustrating. Thanks for the javascript tip, as turning of Javascript corrects the issue. Note that I do not have the problem when using Chrome.

I've done step 1 that Linc has suggested above, with no change.
