Q: Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable.  I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help.  My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution.  Need help.

If you don't intend upgrading your RAM and want a fast responding Mac which runs on 2GB RAM, then yes, that would be my advice. Install 10.6 and then update to 10.6.8  It is still a very good OS X and does not have the Memory demands of the newer OSxs. If it were me, though, I would just Max out the RAM.

thanks pete, I appreciate the advice.  I looked into more ram before and it will only let me go up to a total of 4gb, do you think that is enough to make it run better?  thank you again.

4GB will always be noticeably better than 2 GB.

8GB will do even better, 16 GB is probably overshoot.

Your MacbookPro can handle 16GB as maximum.

But don't forget to get rid of the Spigot malware (it wil "run better" also.. )

Still having this same problem with Yosemite. Was ready for a fresh start and did a clean install of Yosemite on my MacBook Pro late-2011. Started having major speed issues immediately. Read through this thread and tried all of the fixes on TechDad's list. Suspected FileVault as the culprit so did another clean install and this time did DID NOT ENABLE FileVault. Haven't loaded any of my files or programs, and it's still unusably slow. Help!

Mine seems to slow down after a week of use. Both at work (a newer imac 2013) and my macbook pro from 2009. Solution. Do a network recovery. It only takes about 10 minutes and totally sorts out the lagging and makes it function at lightning speed again. You might as well try... alt+cmd+R and break it off when you come to the time machine recovery. That's not needed.

No you are not. You are having different problems. And the first one you need to tend to before clearing junk and reinstalling the OS X is the need to make some space on your HardDrive. You have 4Gb left, hardly enough for any computer to run efficiently. You need to move a lot of your larger files and projects to an external drive and leave at least 10-15% of your drive free to run at somewhere near it's optimum. When you have done that, start a new thread of your own and post another etrecheck report in it.

    Cheers

    Pete

You have accidentally installed Spigot adware.  See Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac.

For faster, more efficient identification and optional removal of all currently know adware, run AdwareMedic, available free from this Forum’s Malware Guru, owner of TheSafeMac blog and a colleague of mine.

To understand why this happened and how to avoid it in the future see John Galt’s How to install adware.
