Q: Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable.  I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help.  My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution.  Need help.

    I promised an update:

I tried to back up my system using Time Machine and the back up process never got passed "Preparing to back up".  That was a fail.  I got back with support and they said I will need to manually move my stuff over to my external hard drive and do a complete clean install.

The problem is absolutely (for my system) with FileVault (tell everyone you know not to select the option to turn on FieVault unless they know what they're doing). In 4 days, it has not moved beyond 19% and I am nowhere close to a "super user" with tons of stuff.

I have moved almost everything over to my external hard drive (all but iPhoto) and then I will begin the process of erasing and reinstalling.

    Again, I'll keep posting updates.

    Final Update:

The problem was the FileVault.  Because I had no backup (my bad) of my system on my EHD, I had to manually migrate all of my photos, music, documents and 3rd party apps to my EHD.  Then I did a clean install of Yosemite (erased my hard drive and installed from the restoration disk).  The migration took the better part of the day, but so worth it.

My system is upgraded, my storage is clean and all is moving swiftly and well.

Apple Support was really great and they were all a little surprised and concerned that a) the option to turn on FileVault was present in the Set Up phase of installation, and b) that the default is set to "Turn On FileVault".  We shall see if they make any changes or updates.

Cheers to all and thank you for your help!

I had the same problem, the encryption struck at 18.8%.

Speed back up to normal after I disabled FileVault using terminal command - sudo fdesetup diable

The main slowdown I see is in a very clunky and slow user interface (window rendering). Switching between applications, I can literally see the steps the UI takes to deselect application 1 and highlight selected application 2. Things seem worse with an external screen. I have a strong feeling this is graphics driver related.

I don't think it's just FileVault problem, it's especially because of bad drivers for NVIDIA 330m and Macbook Pro 15" 2010. If I try to set the finder window to FULLSCREEN, I have big graphic glitches, the same thing with youtube video and fullscreen.

I have confirmed that the lag UI starts to occur when my MBP switches from integrated graphics to discrete graphics. More detailed reply here: Re: Yosemite very laggy after installation

I just decrypted my FileVault... took about half an hour, but my MBPr sped back up considerably! Still not fast as it was when i was running Mavericks but much better than it was since i installed Yosemite over the weekend.  I'm going to hold out on going back to Mavericks for now...

Hi Chrissie, sorry to hear that your MBP is running slow.  I feel your pain.  The good news is that it seems like much of the trouble seems to stem from one of two primary causes: 1 has to do with the graphic interfaces and the other is with FileVault.  Have you checked your Security & Privacy settings to see if you turned on FileVault during installation of Yosemite?

    OK Final FINAL update:

After my clean install of Yosemite, my iCloud Drive folder looked empty, but it was not empty.  I could see all my files from my devices, but not the folder on my MBP.  Also, if I searched for a file in Spotlight, I could get the folder...just couldn't see it in the iCloud Drive...so... I turned my iCloud off and then on again, then restarted my system.  Everything repopulated, so that was that.  Just in case anyone has this issue after they've successfully reinstalled Yosemite.
