Q: Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable.  I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help.  My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution.  Need help.

Open settings preferences then Adobe and click check now.

EVen if if it's set to do it automatically I discovered it doesn't.

    This May resolve whole issue.

    Restart

A.dickey, you have me intrigued.  Can you walk me through it a bit. Where am I looking for "settings"? My issues did seem to coincide with a new pop up box earning about Adobe needing legacy Java 6.

    Hi there,

I've tried first SMC and PRAM reset, and had an impression troubles gone. But unfortunately they did not. I've found WindowServer consuming a lot of CPU feat. I found elsewhere I should 'Reduce Transparency' in Preferences->Accessibility and advice to set up automatic Dock hiding. And ... the first did the trick for me. Dock is OK both ways. But reducing transparency (really should be called translucency) helped a lot. WindowServer now at max 10%. Everything is smooth and nice. Do not have idea what helped more...

MBP mid 2010, 120 GB SSD OWC, 8 GB RAM...

Thanks a lot to everybody. Apple should improve their performance and/or slow down with new OSX incarnations...

    Open System Preferences

At the bottom you should see a red icon Flash Player

    open it

    under updates, tap Check Now

    it will then update

    restart

and hey presto the problem MAY be gone

I don't know why it had never updated before because i had it permitted for adobe to install updates - weird

I also deleted other files listed as 'invalid' in my Etrecheck. Its running much much better now, almost normally.

Let me know what happens, if you try it

Thanks HighTechDad ... I ran through you're list & did all that I could without having to do any major reinstallations.

The good news is that for me my iMac is now running back at the speed it was with Mavericks ... quite what was the  tipping point of success I'm not sure. I also found under activity monitor that Google Chrome Helper was taking a lot of my CPU & Memory & found that changing setting to 'click to play' for ads has also help reduce that burden on my system.

Anyway so thank you for your help list & pleased I'm back to normal.

    Good luck all !

@Jamax5 - Glad that it worked. Do you know by any chance, what helped?

Interesting about the Google Chrome Helper. I checked mine in Activity Monitor and found that mine was red and "Not Responding". Going to do some research on that.

Which version of Chrome are you using? I'm on Chrome Canary.

Hey! It's been 2 hard weeks with Yosemite... First after updating I could not start my Mac. Now that the "problem" is solved my Mac is extremely slow, even when typing this message. I am very disappointed with Yosemite:

Ok... so I've done quite a bit since my last post and my system's performance issues have significantly improved.

I finished cleaning out the remnants of SplashTop and most of the remnants of VirtualBox (still one pesky entry). Here is my EtreCheck diag. report, now:

SoundFlower and TeamViewer remain installed. I've stated before, I'm not married to SoundFlower, though I do have a need for it. I use TeamViewer quite often, though, and have for years. These two applications will stay until I see reason to remove them.

I'm not convinced that I have re-gained all original system performance, but it is way better than it was. The most notable changes came with the removal of all the SplashTop files that were left behind, following this process:

    1. Go to /Applications/, remove any app starting with “Splashtop" or "Splashtop Streamer
    2. Go to /Users/Shared/, remove “SplashtopStreamer
    3. Go to /Library/LaunchDaemons/, remove all files starting with “com.splashtop
    4. Go to /Library/LaunchAgents/, remove all files starting with “com.splashtop
    5. Go to ~/Library/Preferences/, remove all files starting with “com.splashtop
    6. Go to ~/Library/Logs/, remove SPLog.txt, SPLog.txt.bak, and iris-log-pipe (if they actually exist).
    7. Go to /System/Library/Extensions/, remove SRXDisplayCard.kext and SRXFrameBufferConnector.kext (if they actually exist).
    8. Go to /Library/Frameworks/, remove SRFrameBufferConnection.framework (if it actually exist).

FYI: after doing all this, there was also a noticeable improvement in the zippiness of Safari, specifically in how fast it launches and loads a website.

Hey @Uruguayo88 - It looks like FileVault 2 is encrypting your HD which will explain the slowdown. Best bet it to let it finish and it should speed up. You can turn it off once it is done but it will slow down again while it decrypts.

Very helpful list. It didn't fix my specific speed / hanging issues, but I can see where it would help most folks facing a slowness problem.

    Hi there

I had massive problems with my MBP 2012 slowing to an almost complete standstill after installing Yosemite (including encrypting with Filevault).  I implemented steps 1-6 from HighTechDad's suggestions and my Mac is now working well again.  Thank you High Tech Dad and everyone else who's helpful suggestions I read here.

I am having a similar issue, can someone help?

    Problem description:

downloaded yosemite and said yes to file vault.  Left for one week. return to extremely slow computer and file vault progress bar 33% of the way complete with no apparent movement.  Checked forum and turned encryption off from disk utility.  Now says “decrypting” and 66% along.  Computer still very slow.  Hoping not to have to wait a week for this to finish!
