Q: Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable.  I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help.  My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution.  Need help.

You are running Nortons, one of the most destructive softwares you can put on a Mac. There should be an uninstaller that came with the disc.

You have other problamic installs but I would certainly be starting with uninstalling Nortons completely.

These are the results from a complete re-partition, re-format and re-install of OS X Yosemite, from a Sandisk Cruzer 16GB USB Thumb Drive. After the install I set the Master Password, changed the Computer Name, displayed Macintosh HD, searched for Updates via the App Store (did not install), and finally, copied the EtreCheck application into my Applications folder.

In the end, cleaning up my machine, based on EtreCheck results wasn't enough. There was a noticeable performance increase, but my machine still was not as snappy as it was before. A clean install, seems to have done the trick, though I'm not sure that is an adequate recommendation for most people. The upgrade shouldn't have caused so many issues. At the very least, there should be some form of pre-installation check, to preemptively let people know where there could be issues.

In reply to Encryption taking forever and freezing.  We experienced the same problem..ended up at the apple genius bar and our hard drive was long gone..( macbook air )., and our computer was out of warranty by a year.  Obviously they knew they had a problem, because we were given a new one for free ( service included).  With the exception of occasionally slow loading, everything is working well. I have had to either restart, or drop the wi-fi and log back in to get the speeds back up..they have a problem no doubt

Hello, same issue.  Slowness and trouble booting.  I get stuck on the login screen (often), it's doesn't freeze, but it doesn't respond to anything I click or type.  I'm having trouble booting up now.  I generally have to kill hold down the power button to reboot when things seize up.  I'm getting stuck on the Apple logo screen.  I have to do a PRAM reboot to get past it, but that doesn't always work.  I managed to get a full Time Machine backup, so I think my data is safe.  I reinstalled Yosemite from scratch into a new partition, and it runs beautifully.  However, I have so many apps and so much data/config info in the original install, I really want to try to fix it.  Here is a paste of my EtreCheck:

The only think I noticed, after the "FRESH" Yosemite installation, which didn't recover to the normal speed was WiFi acquisition and connection. Booting up and logging in is actually substantially faster than on Mavericks. However, the system stalls when trying to connect to Wifi.

This WiFi problem can actually cause additional issues, during the login process. When WiFi won't connect as it should, Login Items, such as Adobe Creative Cloud (including Creative Cloud File Sync) and Dropbox can't connect.

I have to say, I'm not convinced Apple's Disk Utilities really work as they should. I previously stated that I deleted the partition and reformatted the hard drive, before performing a fresh Yosemite install. I have noticed a few things which still remain...

    1. For instance, there were "remembered" WiFi Networks this MacBook Pro hasn't been connected to, since long before the re-partition, re-format and re-install. In fact, there was actually a "remembered" WiFi Network, for a network this MacBook Pro has NEVER been connected to. hasn't even been within 20 miles of it, though my iPhone 5S has. I can only assume this means there is some sort of iCloud Sync "feature" which makes this happen.
    2. During the re-partition, re-format and re-install process, I also noticed my MacBook Pro auto-connected to a password-protected WiFi network, from within my home. Again, a re-partition, re-format and re-install should have deleted all previous settings (should have deleted everything). Yet it didn't even ask me for a password, to reconnect, until after the first time I logged into Yosemite.
    3. Safari "Favorites" were remembered, but my "Top Sites" weren't. Again, this is likely some sort of iCloud Sync "feature" - but again, I wasn't aware this was part of iCloud.
    4. A couple other things struck me as odd, due to the re-partition, re-format and re-install process I went through, but I can't remember what they were, now.

At this point, I have now re-activated Time Machine, installed several of the Adobe Creative Cloud apps (which I use on a daily basis) and deleted all "remembered" WiFi Networks.

    Problem description:

WiFi not connecting correctly and takes about 2 minutes to connect to a "remembered" WiFi Network, which has no problem authenticating 2 x iPhone 5S (iOS 8.1), an iPhone 4 (iOS 5), an iPad Mini (iOS 8), a MacBook Air (Mavericks) and 2 x Apple TV units (Model A1469 - Apple TV Software 7.0.1). All of these have no issues, but the MacBook Pro, represented in this EtreCheck Report, now does. FYI: When I first commented in this area, I had just upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. My MacBook was slow and it took more time than usual to load websites, but it never took a long time to connect to the WiFi. Now I've gone through a complete re-partition, re-format and re-install process. The MacBook is now much quicker, but takes much longer to connect to WiFi. Once connected, websites load very quickly (http://speedof.me/show.php?img=141027012735-52138.png)

    Hi,

I'm having the same problem with my Macbook Pro, I have tried everything (PRAM reboot, turn off transparency, turn off notifications, turn off app at login, Safe Mode Reboot) also I notices that some apps were using too much RAM, Google Chrome opened two Helpers for each tab, and they were eating like 300MB of Memory each one, same with Firefox and some more that I unistalled... but before reinstalling the whole software again I want to know what does my EtreCheck shows:

You are not having the same problem. Every etrecheck report posted here so far shows different issues. If you wish for help then start a new thread where you will get more individualised assistance with your issues. At present, this thread is just one big mess and I feel sorry for the OP. It seems nobody knows who is advising who of what.

It may come right if you just leave it going and don't use your computer for a few hours (e.g. overnight) - mine did.

My MacBook Air (late 2010) has been very sluggish since upgrading to Yosemite. I just ran EtreCheck for the first time and I think I may have more fundamental problems. As you will see below, I have a lot of System Launch Agents and Daemons that failed. What can I do to correct this? Much thanks.
