iMac not waking up from sleep after Yosemite upgrade

My iMac will not wake up from sleep mode after upgrading to Yosemite. I must force shutdown with power button, then on restart, I get grey progress bar screens X2, then it boots up normally.

Can anyone help or give insight?

Thank you!

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10), Mid 2011 27"; 2.7GHz Quad i5 12GB mem 1TB

I have this same problem with Yosemite 10.10.1. The only thing that fixes my problem, for now, is to use the DEFAULT settings in ENERGY SAVER system preferences. Also, I've found that "Wake for network access" must be checked regardless of anything else I check or uncheck. I'm not happy with the fact that I cannot customize my ENERGY SAVER preferences. I, too, am hoping for an update from Apple that will fix this problem.

I have been in touch with Apple and currently have an open 30 day ticket. I've explained the issue(s) and said that there is (currently) a 4 page thread on this discussions board.

They advised trying and SMC (system management controller) :

This didn't work for me.

During our chat I offered to try out the TB drive with my retina MBP. The MBP has had no issues waking from sleep for about 4 days with LaCie d2 attached !!!

I've also been in touch with LaCie (on Apple's advice) to see if there is s firmware update. i've sent them system info regarding the Mac's TB connectors. I've had a holding reply but am waiting for a full response.

I've also 'discovered' that if you leave your computer alone for about 5 minutes after it fails to wake, it will cold restart on its own. When it does it generates a message:

Apple have had two of these sent already. May I suggest everyone with this issue does the same?

To me, Yosemite + older Mac + TB drive = problem. Take one of these out and the problem disappears. When I hear from LaCie i will update

Happy New Year

Thanks for the info! I can also confirm that setting the SMC etc doesn't change anything, and that disconnecting the TB drive DOES fix the problem. The reply from LaCie won't help, because they told me to format and partition the drive correctly and failing that reformat it! I think it's an Apple problem, as it didn't exist prior to Yosemite. I connect the TB LaCie drive periodically to let Timemacine to catch up. Ugly kludge for Apple IMO.

I have been experiencing this on and off again with most discussions leading to the possiblities of the peripherals being the main culprit. During one of the restarts, I experienced a reboot message much in the same way that HelicopterJon shows above. My message indicated an error in the graphics card, not anything to do with a USB conflict.

I also seemed to have this problem with the USB drive attached but when removed, after an indeterminate amount of time, I'd get the Black screen of death, unable to graphically VPN onto my machine, yet low level system services where still available such as my Plex server and Air Video servers still functioning without a problem.

I have a developer account so I posted a bug report on Apples radar service.

I use this machine as a test platform so I have a Yosemite beta, but also know that these betas have been pretty solid since the initial preview days and Apple doesn't seem to mess with system drivers too much on point releases...so I looked at my installation dates and see that I also installed a beta version of iTunes about the same time this issue initially occurred...so I'm trying to see if this occurs without iTunes running, specifically in full screen mode...since I've had similar experiences in the past when the OS was trying to run programs in full screen mode..

So...are any of you using the recent beta of iTunes 12.0.1.26?

Not cool that users cannot report bugs in an efficient manner

Completely agree. I fired off an email to Apple essentially asking the same question. Why should users have to pony up £25 (I'm in the UK - that's about $38) to report a bug in their OS. I've not had a reply yet.

However, if you dig deep enough in their support service I found this:

I requested an exception and this was honoured by their support staff.

That's useful to know going froward; except, I still fear they would make you reformat your hard disk and re-install the os before admitting it's their problem to solve. In the case of having to remove a TB LaCie drive to prevent lockups waking up, why can't they look at the forced re-boot data collected to solve the problem?? This didn't happen prior to Yosemite.

If you're talking about wake from sleep problem while a TB Time Machine disk is mounted, it's a intermittent problem. It can work without locking up for up to a couple of days before locking up in my experience. This problem is not being explored by Apple at the highest level and in the detailed manner that's required to fix it.

Well it's now been a couple of days since my last post; my machine no longer gets hung up on wake from sleep. I also set my prefs to default under the energy saver tab-I will try changing this and see if the results change. I've been able to keep my external drives attached too.

Has anyone tried to close iTunes (beta or otherwise) to see if this problem goes away?
