So I purchased 500 GB of iCloud storage. Funny thing is my Macbook Air is 128 GB. Everything I put in the iCloud Drive on my Mac also stays on my mac. This makes no since. I want the files kept in the Cloud and not on my Mac. Any suggestions.

Downgrade your iCloud storage to less than 128 GB.
iCloud drive is not meant be an external drive, but for syncing your Macs. It will ensure, all devices are having the same content.

I have read the FAQ. It says store any file in the Cloud about 15 times...It doesn't say store on your hard drive and cloud.
It says " Documents you store in iCloud Drive will be kept up to date across all of your devices", and that means they are mirrored on all your devices.
