Hi Andrew Macrae,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

The option to edit your incoming mail server is grayed out because of the new option in Yosemite to "Automatically detect and maintain account settings." Disable that option in the advanced settings of your account in Mail, click back to General settings, and select save settings on the popup that appears. Then you will be able to edit your incoming mail server.

Hello Andrew Macrae,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

From your post I understand that you are trying to change your Mail account's outgoing mail server. To do this, please follow the steps below where you are able to edit your outgoing server information.

  1. Choose Mail > Preferences, then click Accounts.

  2. Select an account.

  3. Click Account Information, then review the server being used for outgoing messages.

    • If None is selected, click the Outgoing Mail Server pop-up menu, then choose a different server.

    • Make sure the selected server is one specified by your account provider and that the server name is spelled correctly. Click the Outgoing Mail Server pop-up menu, choose Edit SMTP Server List, then review or enter information as directed by your provider.

If you contact your provider about the server, use the form in this Apple Support article to record Mail settings you might need for configuring the server.

    • If the server is obsolete, click the Outgoing Mail Server pop-up menu, choose Edit SMTP Server List, select the server, then click Remove User uploaded file. Don’t remove a server that’s in use by an account unless you’re ready to add a different server for the account.

  4. Test your changes by sending yourself a message.

I stupidly upgraded to El Capitan as soon as it became available. You'd think I'd know better after the Yosemite upgrade fiasco. Now I have the same problem with the grayed out incoming server. Under advanced options, Automatically detect and Maintain account settings is also grayed out so I can't uncheck it.

Why do I have to update my phone to send email?? In my opinion I don't think we should be forced to update our phones if we don't want to!

This thread is about Macintosh Mail, not iPhone mail.

Perhaps you should ask your question in an iPhone forum
