Oh my gosh, thank you! This was so frustrating...I was looking for a solution for days. Apple should really update this fix in settings, or make an easy way to see who is on DND mode and disable. My mom turned it on accidentally and I had no idea this was an iPhone feature for individual contacts. For the seniors out there, Apple please make it easier!
That is because that is no longer how it works. That setting was changed to Hide Alerts. It seems they have removed the ability to just silence the alert for individuals in a group message, you silence all using the Hide Alert switch. See this page from the iPhone User Guide. http://help.apple.com/iphone/11/#/iph62faab6a4
This has nothing to do with Do Not Disturb being enabled in Settings>Do Not Disturb. Follow the instructions already given to turn off DND for that specific text conversation.
Sweet!
Thank you.

just sweep left and tap show alerts
Isn't it great that they've added that feature in the time since this thread was last active? I find it very useful.
I tap on details and no do not disturb comes up

Didn’t work
When this thread was started back 3 years ago in 2014, the post that you are referring to was the correct action. Under the new iOS, the action is different. You would go to the same area, but swipe the switch Hide Alerts now.
I am having the same problem with the “do not disturb crescent” by one of my text conversations. I went to the details like you suggested but I don’t have an option to turn off do not disturb there. Thought?
Can you provide a screen shot of what you are referring to?
yes, i have the same problem... there is a crescent symbol in the left side to the name in text messages. it turns blue when you received a message from that person and turns gray after reading it... i have asked him if turned on do not disturb symbol but he hasn't. now my problem is that i dont hear a message coming from him if he sent me one. how can i get rid of it?
thanks
Go to the conversation, and tap on the 'Details' button at the top right. Turn 'Do Not Disturb' off and it should be all good :-)
That just happened to me (my friends message). Brand new today. AND I also just realized all his photos from our 7 month convo are gone except the last couple of days. All prior photos have a big icon with a question mark but the photo will not appear :---( I just noticed it when i went into details to turn off the do not disturb (which was on ?!?) as you suggested.
Any thoughts.
Thanks much!
