System keeps waking from sleep every 2 hours

Since Yosemite update, system keeps waking from sleep approx. every 2 hours. It goes back to sleep on its own but keeps waking up again. I have "wake for network access" in System Preferences turned off. Here are samples of the console messages:

10/19/14 1:02:43.000 AM kernel[0]: Wake reason: RTC (Alarm)

10/19/14 1:02:43.000 AM kernel[0]: RTC: Maintenance 2014/10/19 08:02:43, sleep 2014/10/19 06:14:45

10/19/14 3:00:41.000 AM kernel[0]: Wake reason: RTC (Alarm)

10/19/14 3:00:41.000 AM kernel[0]: RTC: Maintenance 2014/10/19 10:00:41, sleep 2014/10/19 08:12:51

I have no idea what "Wake reason: RTC (Alarm)" means. Any help would be appreciated.

You coul'd test if it's an internal problem or one with the network by turning off your router.

You can't exclude that. Yosemite could interpret signals in another way (=incompatible communication).

It seems like a Yosemite issue and not an external issue, because the Mac will wake every 2 hours (almost exactly, but not quite). For instance, when I put my Mac to sleep for 8 hours while I sleep myself, it wakes at roughly 12:05 am, 2:01 am, 3:58 am, etc.

Any news from this issue?

I have this same issue: My iMac is waking up every 2 hours, no matter if I have internet connection or not. Wake reason (console log) is the same: RTC (Alarm). From the system preferences the wake up from internet access is not on, power nap is not on. Clearly a bug.

Could you explain what the disantvatage/problem is when your computer wakes up for a few seconds while you are sleeping? Why did you even scroll trough the logs to find that message?

Even if it should not do that. Why do you put that much effort into this issue?

IIt's probably. not as big an issue if your machine is near silent or in another room - apart from wear and tear.

On my 09 Mac Pro however the noise of the optical drive, the GPU fans and various case fans spinning up is enough to wake me.

I'm therefore stuck with shutting down or waking up myself every couple of hours.

Ok thats a valid reason. You could run a script before and after sleep to fix it (would require password).

before sleep:

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

after sleep:

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

Would you mind explaining what exactly those commands do? If the "before sleep" command prevents waking up while sleeping, what does the second one do?

And clarifying "before sleep" and "after sleep"? Before Sleep I have to assume would be anytime the computer is awake. But After Sleep I'm not clear on - I mean, you can't enter a command after the computer is asleep, can you? So running it "after sleep" would have to be once the machine is again awake - which would be the same state the machine is in when you run the "before sleep" command. What am I missing here?

Same problem here. My iMac wake up every 2 hours. Wake by network is disabled.

Since my iMac is in my room. It bothering a lot. I need to switch off the mac now.

before sleep (before you put the computer to sleep):

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

after sleep (after you woke it up – next time you use it):

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

This turns a system component off/on.

Better would be if you raise logging and maybe find the cause of this behavior.

Immediately before sleep:

This will discoveryd log every thing it does.

sudo discoveryutil log level Everything

after sleep:

Go back to normal logging

sudo discoveryutil loglevel 1

I have the same problem. I updated to Yosemite on my mid-2010 iMac two days ago. Ever since then it has been partially waking from sleep throughout the night- just the discs but not the display. It shuts itself down again after about 20 seconds but is in our bedroom and wakes us up...

Last night it it woke at 23.40, 01.29, 02.18, 04.07, 05.56 and 07.45. The previous night was a similar story...

Wake for network access is off and I don't think this machine supports Power Nap or App Nap.

I have not encountered this problem with previous versions of OS X

It is driving me nuts...!

System Preferences > Energy Saver > Restore Defaults

Your system should now be suspended to disk after 70min of sleep. If not it can be set up to do so via terminal.

System keeps waking from sleep every 2 hours
