Yosemite hangs during update

I am trying to update my Macbook Air to Yosemite but as it reaches about one third during the installation process, it just stops and hangs.

I've beed reading other similar cases and decided to try to wait it out, but that was about 24 hours ago. This is my second attempt after the same thing happened the first time.

Does anyone know why this might be happening and what to do to avoid this the next time?

Same thing, nearly, on a MacBook Pro 2009 previously running 10.8.6, trying to update to Yosemite 10.10.3. Hangs with "About a minute remaining" for an hour or so, so far. Went to Recover, tried to reinstall, same thing. I don't get any option in Recover to go back to previous system, which was working fine for me. I thought it was time to update, since I figured the bugs should have been worked out by now... Can anyone help me revert to the previous system?

Try running the combo update.

10.10.3 Combo Update

Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.

Revert to a Previous OS X Mountain Lion

Revert to a Previous OS X - Yosemite

Revert to former OS from Mavericks

Revert to Snow Leopard

Revert Yosemite to Mavericks

If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.
