Nov 18, 2015 11:58 AM in response to mswampby JerimiahJ,The memory leak in Mail is obvious when you watch it happen on "Activity Monitor" program found in your utilities. I tried many fixes from all over the net and none worked. Finally I ran Onyx a free mac program that runs a lot of the normal cleanup routines that you can access in terminal. This has completely fixed the problem for the last 24 hours. I've used this software for many years through all its updates on 8 or 10 different Mac's without any problems.

Nov 19, 2015 2:12 PM in response to MtnBikerby MtnBiker,24 hours after toggling off (unchecking) "uncheck the Use IDLE command if the server supports it," I checked them for all four accounts and no problems. AFAIK I didn't do anything to fix the problem except this unchecking and rechecking. I have a total of six IMAP accounts with this option, with I had only unchecked the ones at my host 1and1.
Time will tell.

Dec 2, 2015 1:39 PM in response to MtnBikerby MtnBiker,Two weeks later and no reoccurrence. Only toggled IDLE checkbox. Didn't delete the files mentioned by some. El Capitan. A mystery.

Dec 2, 2015 1:42 PM in response to MtnBikerby farhuset,I followed the 4th step and that helped me.
It does not do anything with tour mails, but the plist settings.
It works!

Dec 3, 2015 2:37 PM in response to MtnBikerby MtnBiker,I had posted that everything seemed OK after toggling IDLE off and on. Went for a week or so without problems. I just rebooted and within a few minutes got the out of memory message. Force Quit (maybe I could have just quit) Mail and relaunched and it everything is OK ten minutes later. So was it the reboot? On El Cap.

What definitely helped me:
NO drafts, NO 5 minute interval, NO idle checking/unchecking and so on...
1) I backed up complete folder Mail in ~/Library/ and deleted all the accounts from Mail.app
2) I disconnected power cord and let my iMac (2013) without power overnight. (Don't know, if this played some role, but i did it.)
3) Next morning I started it after 7 hours cold.
4) I deleted file Container.plist and folder Data from ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
5) I deleted file Envelope Index and folder V3 from ~/Library/Mail6) I started Mail.app and set three mail accounts: iCloud, Gmail and one local IMAP account.
Now all works fine and Mail.app takes about 100 MB RAM.
Thank you so much!!!!
I've been using OS X El Capitan (v 10.11.1) for several months and haven't had any problems. A few days ago my computer came to a sudden halt when the Mail app started using 10 GB of ram out of my 12 GB. I've attempted so many things to get this working again and the only thing that helped was deleting the "Data" folder as mentioned in #4. I started by removing the "Container.plist" file but that didn't work. I made a backup to my desktop of the folder and then moved the original to the trash.
I opened Mail and it is now running at 119.4 MB!!!!!
It did remove all the local emails and folder links just under the tool bar. My signatures need to be reassigned again but this is all easy stuff to fix. Thanks again for the help @Kessa.CZ!
