What does "iTunes could not backup the iPhone, because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone" mean? Why won't itunes let me backup my phone?

I have an iPhone 6, I backed it up when I got it, but it's been a while since i'v backed it up. The iTunes pop up also says "Delete the backup for this iPhone, then try again." I've tried restarting my phone, deleting some pictures, and deleting other things to get some space. The phone is iOS 8.0.2
