Does Ipad air 2 wifi only model support GPS?
iPad Air, iOS 8.0.2
I had my ipad air 2 with wifi only in Costa Rica. I downloaded offline maps and it worked to my surprise even in the most remote areas of the forest. I was pleasantly shocked to find that it followed me in real time on my offline maps without any connection whatsoever.
If you mean does it have built-in GPS then no, only the cellular models do
Thanks for the reply.
So then if I buy the cellular model then do I have GPS coverage even if I dont have a sim card inside?
Cellular iPad have a built-in GPS chip, you don't need to have a SIM to use GPS - if you are using mapping software then you will either need to use an app which has maps built-in into it, or you will need an internet connection to be able to download maps as you are using it.
Great, many thanks for clarifying.
Just an FYI (not bashing Apple), I found that some other tablets with wifi only DO have a GPS chip. The NVIDIA SHIELD wifi has the chip, so I could run a hotspot on my phone and use the SHIELD as a nice GPS screen. Other tablets may do this also, this is just my one experience. It would be nice if apple could put the GPS chip in as well.
You can also run a hotspot from your phone to a WiFi only iPad and use the phone GPS.
Have you done this successfully? How do you get the iPad to use the iPhone's GPS over wifi? This would be pretty cool to get working!
I did with a friends WiFi only iPad. It will also work with compatible standalone GPS units from Garmin and others. But I really don't see the point, just use the phone or the GPS.
For me, I would like a larger screen which is why I would like a tablet for GPS. I will try this on my commute home!
I fly a Phantom 3 Drone and love the larger iPad Air 2 screen to watch the video. I love your idea. So I should be able to teather my iphone to my Ipad 2 and the GPS will work. Cant wait to try this. Thanks
You are a genius. It works !
Fantastic I am so happy.
Wow! Dirty Little Secret. Just spent $500. on an iPad Air 2 for my wife's Christmas. No GPS connection for my hiking wife with her dog. Unbelievable, Except that I didn't check until now. Location based on wifi connection. Right. Very useful in Yosemite. No, the REAL one in the Sierra Nevadas. I must someday learn my basic lesson.
Its hardly a secret at all. Wifi only iPads have never included aGPS and that is stated clearly on Apple's web site under the device specifications. Why anyone would buy any electronic device without making sure it includes the specs and features they wish or require is beyond me.
can you please tell me how and how can intest it to be sure it works on sea. i cannot play dice.please help.
