Q: Cannot open the Domain file in iWeb, Mavericks

Hello world of !

I just formatted the MacBook Pro, performing a clean instal of Mavericks. Having a HDD and a SSD into the machine, the Domain file of my iWeb sites was saved on the HDD while the OS and the apps are running on the SSD. The problem that I now have is that whenever I try to open the Domain file and get to my websites, the iWeb opens anew, with no website inside, inviting me to choose a template to create a new one.

Any hint as to how to get to my websites?

Thank you all in advance!

A Mac user from Romania!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

To open your domain file in Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.

do shell script"/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"

    delay 1

    tell application "iWeb" to activate

You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.

Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. The script modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files if desired.

NOTE:  once the domain file has been opened the first time you won't need the iWeb Switch Domain app again until you decide to switch domain files.

WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

NOTE: for Mavericks, 10.9 ,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

You mean iWeb Switch Domain, right?

Control (right) - click on the app and select Open from the contextual menu. See if that will open the app.

I tried right clicking on it, and got the same message.

    Any other suggestions?

And thank you very much for being helpful.

You are my only hope at this point. : )

You could try downloading Domain Cracker from here - Roddy's website and clicking on the link where it has download here.  It is designed to be used with Mountain Lion, so not so sure if it will work with Mavericks or Yosemite.

In the end though, I think you will now find that people are just not developing these tools to work with iWeb any longer, because people now are not using iWeb any longer - it has not been sold or supported by Apple for at least the last 2 years and as iWeb has not been developed actively, then most folks have moved on and nobody is developing other things for iWeb any longer - there is no point it the app itself has been ditched and is no longer being developed - most people have moved on, so it is probably time to consider re-building your site(s) in another application that is being actively maintained and developed.

Take a look at the following to see if you like any of them:-

    RapidWeaver

    Sandvox

    Freeway Pro/Express 7

    WebAcappella 4

Flux V - (steep learning curve but has the ability to import html and css files which the others do not - you need to know some html and css though_

    Macaw

EverWeb - (this is the most like iWeb in style and will be easiest to learn and has lots built in like contact forms, drop down menus and SEO)

Time to leave iWeb behind and move on now.

    Or even better :

    Hi Ethmoid,

I realize most people have moved on from iWeb.

I personally am now using Squarespace for my own sites and sites I would do for other people.

The reason Im trying to get back into this iWeb site is because it needs only minor tweaking and does not warrant a total site redo.

Yes, change is everywhere you look.

It always struck me as odd that Apple didn't stay in the website creation business, but such is life.

    Thanks Wyodor,

    Your suggestion solved my problem.

    I went here:

Download iWebSites here: iWebSites.zip (Manual included)

And iWebSites successfully opened my old domain.

    Thanks for your help.

    Any other suggestions?

    Yes, three:

1 - create your own with the scrip provided by Cyclosaurus using AppleScript Editor.

    2 - try DomainCracker.

3 - try one of the two options offered by Wyodor.
