The progress indicator has existed in every version of OSX since Snow Leopard. It is normal (it used to be a little wheel that went round, now it's a bar that expands)

I get the same slow login issue
Ok, thanks man.
I don't know why it's so slow though.

3rd party junk is usually the cause, especially cleaners / optimizers / security utilities (especially these), drivers for peripherals that have not been updated are also a common cause.
You can check by downloading a copy of etrecheck and running the report, post it here.

I Had this happen at first, but it quit doing it after the 3rd or 4th restart..
I see you're still running a HDD.
Upgrade to an SSD! A small 120GB MX100 or Samsung 840EVO is only $80. $130 for 250GB.
At this point any system running on the old Toshiba 5400RPM hard drive, while trying to run Yosemite, is like tying a boat anchor to a sports car.
Is your reply about the HDD directed at me or Kgrin?
General comment for anyone still using a HDD.
Prime example is boot time. From a cold start, my system is on the desktop and ready in 22-25 seconds including the time it takes me to type in my password.
On a HDD it would take over minute to reach the desktop.
I have a SSD and booting takes several minutes now, where it used to be < 20 seconds or so.
Go into Disk Utility and run the Repair Permission option and then the Verify Disk followed by the Repair Disk option.
Open System Preferences and make sure it is selected as the Startup Disk.
^^^This too!

You can not run a disk repair on the disk that you booted from, please note. Boot from Recovery if you wish to run a disk repair.
[quote]You can not run a disk repair on the disk that you booted from, please note. Boot from Recovery if you wish to run a disk repair.[/quote]
^^^Who told you this? They're incorrect.
You can run a Disk Repair on the same disk you boot from. Most people do this as a maintenance step before installing the next major OS X release.
BTW _ where is the quote button? I had to hard code it with BBCode tags.
Logging into Yosemite takes a long time, plus load bar
