After an hour on the phone with Apple and they told me my mid-2010 iMac won't support this feature?

I restart my computer just because. Open up Messages and BAM there's my code.... UGH!!!

So it all works. On my mid-2010 iMac even. After they told me it wouldn't work. All I had to do was restart....

SMS push and phone calling work between an iPhone and either another iOS device when both are using iOS 8.1 or later, or with any Mac that supports Yosemite. If you were speaking to support exclusively about SMS push and phone calling to your Mac, they were wrong. If however you spoke about Continuity features in general, they were at least half right. As stated in the primary Knowledge Base article, Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity, your iMac will NOT support Handoff or Instant Hotspot. Those both require Bluetooth 4.0 hardware, which your iMac does not have (it has 2.1+EDR).

    Had the same issue.

Got it solved just by turning off and on iMessages on the iPhone. Didn't need any action on the Mac (apart from just viewing the pop up in the Messages app)

I just got my new iPad Air 2 in. How can I get my iPhone to send it the code to get this to work?

This whole thing *****.   I had it set up so SMS would forward to my Macbook, but then upgraded my iPad and wasn't able to get a code to push to it.  So I tried shutting off iMessages to see if that would tickle it, now the ability to forward texts is gone again.  The phone and pad both have 8.1.   I keep rebooting the devices and nothing.   All devices are purchased in 2014.  ***

Cant get this thing to work either. Phone calls work perfectly, but when I want to set up iMessage the app crashes... No code. Just a crash. I tried everything in these posts. Only crashes....

The steps plus restarting the phone did the trick!  Then went back in to Settings > Messages on the phone, turned on Text Message Forwarding, and the code popped up on the Mac in about 10 seconds or so.  Thanks!

This basically worked for me, but I had to add in restarting my iPhone.  After I did that (following your list of steps below) everything worked.  I can send/receive to SMS from Mac and iPad.

    • Signed out of Messages.app on mac
    • Signed in and checked all available emails + phone number for "receive messages at"
    • On my phone, turned off iMessage, turned it back on
    • On my phone, selected all available emails + phone number for "receive messages at"
    • Tried again, it worked

Everything mentioned here didn't work for me.. But I tried the following: reboot recovery and reinstall Yosemite. I didn't delete any files. After the reinstall everything worked great !

I followed harschc4's advice, but I also had to switch off my iPhone 5s and switch it on again to get the procedure to work.  I then did get codes on both my iPad and my iMac.

What happened to me was that iMessage on the iPhone did not have checked the phone number registered for iMessage... Don't know when it got lost.  I used to send iMessages to and from my iPhone.  I also could not check it anywhere else as it did not appear on any other device.

Signing off and back on on the iMessage on my phone fixed this issue.

After following all your various instructions and it's still failed. So, I went ahead check the "BLOCKED" and found that all my email were in the block list, so I have to delete those and it's worked now. The Code will finally show up.

    this worked for me:

    1. iphone - disable imessages
    2. iphone - enable imessages, set up receiving and sending for my mobile number and apple id email
    3. iphone - close settings app because the option "text msg forwarding" didnt show there
    4. mac - imessages - settings - account - log out
    5. mac - quit imessages app
    6. mac - run imessages app and log in

after doing steps 1-3 about 5x and steps 4-6 three times, the pairing nubmer have appeared.

some people also say this (and i tried without results, but it can help somebody):

    • you have to have imsg in mac notification center
    • try also turn off: iphone - settings - general - handoff
    • try DO pairing mac and iphone via bluetooth
    • try NOT pairing mac and iphone via bluetooth
