Q: Text message forwarding - no code on iPad or Mac

Hi,

I've just installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone and iPad. I'd like to set up text message forwarding, but when iPhone ask me to enter the code shown on my iPad or Mac - no code is showed on both.

iPad, iOS 8

Log out of your AppleID on iMessage on your phone completely. Login again are register your mobile number and make sure you select it as "start new conversation from". Go back to Text Message Forwarding and select your Mac (or iPad) from the devices available.  First pop up on your Mac (or iPad) will confirm your mobile number registered to use messaging on Mac (or...you get the picture) and the next pop up will be be the code to put into the phone.

I did the same as everyone else seems to be doing.  I checked all boxes under user accounts and the code popped up instantly.

Thank You everyone for the quick resolution!

The functionality doesn't allow you to begin a conversation to an SMS user, since it relies on FORWARDING a text.   I believe you have to wait for someone to text you.

Fear not, you certainly can initiate SMS messages through Messages :-)

    Well, not really.

After I read your post, I sent a message to someone on the SMS and started a new conversation and it worked without any issues.

    solution that worked for me:

    on laptop:

    open imessage app.

    messages>preferences>accounts>sign out.

then sign back in. your laptop should prompt you to confirm that your laptop is now using imessage. confirm that.

imo, the key is to reconfirm imessage usage on both your iphone and mac.

    on iphone:

    settings>messages>text message forwarding>on

settings>messages>send&receive>...under 'you can be reached...' make sure that the email associated with icloud is selected.

once i selected my icloud email address, i received several codes on my laptop. of course those were all inactive because I sent multiple requests, which i had cancelled.

if you did the same, just cancel all codes and start over.

wifi on laptop and phone are on. lte on.

This worked for me as well. Not sure why. But you can turn all that stuff off after you get the codes. Thanks!

I'm the poor man out on this, by using Windows. (My replacement will be an iMac) I have set both my iPhone 5s & iPad Air up as everyone has suggested. But, my iTunes is the Windows version - so all advice does not seem to work. Can anyone suggest a workaround? Thanks.

For me, both on my Mac and on my iPhone 6 had only my phone number checked. Just for testing purposes, I checked one of my email address on both devices. After turning on the switch for Text Message Forwarding, I finally can see the code on my Mac side, yay!
