If you connect the printer & reboot, software update may detect it & offer to install the drivers for it…
If software update fails it may be too old to be included in the default drivers. What printer is it? Have you been to the manufacturers website & looked for the most recent drivers for you OS version?
Search for the list of 'compatible printers for OSX' - the Apple link on the above page is broken

I know I had a generic one before and it worked great. I tried a generic one I found online this morning and it's still not working. Apple Care suggested I call Epson.

Gutenprint may be the 'generic' drivers you used previously?
