Q: AirDrop Problems in iOS 8.1

I just installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 5s. When I try to turn on AirDrop for Contacts Only using the Control Center it either does not try to turn on or just asks for my iCloud password and then does nothing (i.e. stays turned off). If I select AirDrop for Everyone it sometimes turns on and sometimes does not.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,

Mike

I also have this exact problem with my iPhone 5 in iOS 8.1, where I would select 'AirDrop for Contacts Only', and then I would be asked my iCloud password (happens every time I choose that AirDrop option). But after that the AirDrop option will go back to the Off status. If I select the Contacts Only option again this whole process will repeat itself.

However, I can select 'AirDrop for Everyone', and then AirDrop will stay on - however, I'm wondering why the Contacts Only option is not working for me as well, because that's the option I'd prefer to use.

But the interesting thing is that on my iPad Air, I do not have this problem - the Contacts Only option turns on and stays on on my Air just fine - it does not ask me for my iCloud password at all, although I'm pretty sure I'm signed in on both devices to the same iCloud account.

Removing icloud from the Setting, booting and re-enabling did work for me. Afterwards I do not get a password prompt in airdrop -> Contacts only anymore as well as when writing a new email.

Disabling/Reenabling contact sync in icloud setting did not solve the issue. Actually after disabling the contact sync the contacts where gone and kept gone even after booting and reenabling the contact sync. Removing the icloud account from the iPhone and adding it back after a reboot solved the issue.

What do you mean by "removing iCloud from the Setting". Do you mean to sign out of iCloud or something else?

    Thanks,

OK, I went to iCloud in settings and logged out and rebooted. Before I logged into iCloud again, I tried to enable AirDrop for contacts only. My iPhone stated that iCloud needs to be enabled for this to work. Strange but whatever. I logged back into iCloud and I'm still not able to enable AirDrop for contacts only.

I am using contacts through EAS/Google so I'm not sure if that is messing things up.

I'm having the exact same problem, Mike.

Perhaps related, I'm also often asked for my iCloud password when composing a new email or replying to an email.

I've tried signing out/reboot/sign in to iCloud - same issue.

I've tried delete all content and settings and restore - same issue.

    Hi Guys,

Same issue here - Macbook Pro mid 2013(OSX 10)  iPad mini Retina + iPhone 5s (ios8.1).

    Made the following steps:

    1. logout from the icloud on all devices

    2. restart all devices

    3. login back to icloud

    4. still the ios devices doesn't see the macbook - on macbook can see and can transfer the files to ios devices. between ios devices can transfer with no issue.

    hope to have some solution

    Cheers guys

    Artur

    Hello all,

Just spent 20 minutes with apple support trying lots of things (reset network, etc).

So it works for me in the 2 way now, here is what we done.

On my mac, I delogged from icloud (system settings > Icloud) AND App Store (be sure that's the same Apple ID)

On my Iphone, I delogged from Icloud and App Store too

    I reboot the 2 devices

I logged in Icloud on the mac (system settings > Icloud)

I logged in App Store on the mac

I logged in Icloud and App Store on my Iphone

    I reboot

And now it works... I succed in sending a picture from my Iphone 6 to my mac (late 2012). The icon of my mac appears in my iPhone Air Drop...

Air Drop is set to everybody!

Hope its works for you too,

    keep in touch

OK, I tried logging out of iCloud and the App store followed by a reset. It still does not let me enable contacts only for AirDrop.

    Ugh!

    Thanks,

    Mike,

In the 2 ways? From your mac to you phone or only from your iphone to your mac?

Does your Iphone apprears on the Mac Air Drop?

On your mac, do you set "contact only" to (at the bottom of the air drop page)?

    Does it work with "everyone"?
