Q: No 2G,3G,4G toggle after IOS 8.1 Update

I got very excited when looking at the list of items included in IOS 8.1 update this evening. One of the things on the list has been greatly missed, the toggle to switch off 3G and run on 2G only. After the update..... options are exactly the same. Cellular Data on or off, Enable 4G on or off. I should say I am on EE 3G in the UK.

Does anyone else have a different result after the update????

    HHi Rob!

both enable 4g and mobile data are on... Still no 3G. No option for toggle 2g, 3G 4g since 8.1 update. Have spent hours with Apple and they are due to come back to me. Always had 3G service then got up one morning to see "no service" have had no service for a month now. Maybe it's a mix of Apple update and poor service from the carrier, who knows. Just hoping someone sorts it soon as I can't be the only one with issues. Are you in the USA?

No I'm in the UK, I've had the issue you are having, it is not software related and is definitely down to your carrier. You need to get in touch with your network as opposed to Apple regarding this issue as it appears you need new network settings, either that or (as sometimes happens) your SIM card may have worn out and need to be replaced. Your issue is one I had myself last week (before 8.1 was released). Contact your network/carrier's technical support as they will be better placed to resolve this issue for you than Apple

Rob I'm sorry but I think this issue is totally carrier dependent. The celular settings on iPhone are customizable by the "iPhone carrier setting update" that you might receive sometimes. That is the reason, around the world, that some can toggle 4G or not, hotspot or not, edit APN or not and have different roaming settings. I would assume this is also in this bucket until proved otherwise. Have you encountered two exact phones on the exact same carrier that one has the toggle and the other has not?

if this is the case, it's up to the carriers to update and give us these options.

In answer to your question, no I haven't encountered two exact phones on the same carrier having this issue, BUT when I updated to iOS 8.1 myself on both my iPhone 5S & my iPad Air WiFi/Cellular, and my friend at the same location using the same WiFi connection who is with the same carrier & on the same tariff BUT using different devices (iPhone 5 & iPad Retina Display WiFi/Cellular) we had different results. This is also the case for AppleCare employees with the same service provider but different devices. The issue so far appears to be that the software release when installed on a device running an A7 processor or above ( iPhone 5S, 6, 6 plus & iPad Air/Mini 2 cellular ) it is not installing correctly. A carrier cannot limit a device's ability to be able to connect to higher speed signals. This is a software feature that is not carrier dependant. Just because your carrier may not provide you with a 4G/LTE service, doesn't mean they can restrict your device from searching these frequencies.

I will agree however that the issues in obtaining a signal that Ticka111 describes above are entirely carrier related, but that is a different issue to the matter in hand, that being that there was (as there normally always is) a bug in iOS 8.1, that currently appears to be dependant on device, not on carrier/global location.

Also the carrier settings updates you refer to ONLY affect the settings found in the carrier menu within settings and the ability to activate a personal hotspot, this missing feature is found within the cellular/mobile settings menu.

Yes I'm talking about the toggle, not the tikka issue.

the carrier settings DOES change the celular menu. It's not just the hotspot feature, but also the ability to edit APN settings (inside Celulwr menu) and the 4G toggle. I remember even before 4G, when it was a 3G toggle, changing the sim in my phone from one carrier to another would hide / show this option. I'm positive that the carrier settings can do that (I've used many different carries around the world).

however, per your description, it looks like it's not the problem then. If you saw devices on the same carrier, but got different options, then I'd rule out the carrier settings. I like your theory about A7 and up - maybe a 64-bit bug? Could explain why 32 bit devices are working.

    Hi Guys,

Great work on contacting Apple regarding this issue Rob - well done .

Just a quick thought, is there any pattern with this issue related to how the update is performed? I checked how large the download was on iTunes using OSX and it was offering a 1.95GB download. But the OTA update was only 120mb. I wonder if people who update via iTunes on PC/Mac have the issue, or if this is restricted to OTA downloads where users only download the components that Apple scope of the their devices requirements and deliver just the necessary components.

I have the issue on an iPhone 5S (UK model) and iPad Mini Retina Cellular (international model).

    Hello again guys,

Firstly, although the first line AppleCare assistants will not know that this is a problem in India, rest assured that a fix will be released globally, not just regionally. Apple already know this isn't just a regional issue.

Secondly Mike, the only correlation so far is that anyone I have heard from who is affected, including those working at Apple, are using devices that run on an A7 processor chip or higher. This also means they have a motion coprocessor in as well. The means of installing has no bearing, otherwise the issue would simply be fixed by performing a DFU restore to your device using a Mac/PC which from experience in this individual case is nothing but an exercise in wasting your own time. Rest assured as soon as I hear more, I'll share with you all.

    Hello Rob.

My understanding of this problem is as follows, hopefully you can extend this info so it reaches the right people.

First of all, every Apple SUPPORTED carrier that has 4G/LTE enabled on their network will have the same problem as we're experiencing.

That is every carrier that is listed in this http://phobos.apple.com/version list (that has 4G/LTE enabled in their respective ipcc), will push the ipcc carrier update to the iPhones requesting it, which results in ONLY enabling the 4G/LTE switch and not the menu.

Every other carrier that isn't officially supported by Apple makes the update work as it should, and shows the menu with the three 2G/3G/(4G/LTE) options.

Hi Jaspor, thanks for that info, I will certainly pass it on, but that wouldn't explain why I don't have the settings, when my friend who is on the same carrier does. Unless this is down to the fact that in the UK the iPhone 5 is not supported on LTE owing to EE having a monopoly on the LTE bandwidths the iPhone 5 is capable of receiving.

My understanding of the 8.1 release notes was that this feature would be extended to all, maybe this issue you raise is something Apple overlooked?

As always, will feed back to you guys when I'm updated next.

    Hey again,

Hart heard from Apple tonight, engineering had requested further diagnostics/info which has been supplied. Current estimate from my senior tech is that he'll hopefully have an update on what's going on within 24 hours, a fix still looks like it might be a couple of days away. That said, if the diagnostics help enough that they locate a simple bug, it could be much faster. Gotta wait on Apple I'm afraid

    Rob
