Oct 23, 2014 8:00 AM in response to robAsandersonby Michael Dufranne1,Hi I contacted the Apple support about this as well, I got to talk to the manager of the technical support at the time and he told me that basically Apple had contacted several carriers around the world (he told me mostly USA) to have them adapt their carrier settings to that. But upon roll-out of iOS 8.1 they had not yet discussed with all supported carriers. So basically he told me the update would come through a carrier setting update. I would be great if they would siply check the carrier settings version and tell you if that functionality is going to work or not.
Anyway, I understand this is a different feedback that the one posted here suggesting that the iOS version itself may have a problem. Either way, it seems that we are going to have to wait for either a carrier settings update and/or an iOS update. This is killing me...

Oct 23, 2014 8:06 AM in response to Jasporby Michael Dufranne1,under iOS 7 it was possible to modify the ipcc file to change the parameter that would allow that 4G switch to become a 3G switch. If we could get the ipcc file of someone that does have that option, we could find out which parameter to change to make it work.
-
Oct 23, 2014 8:12 AM in response to Michael Dufranne1by Jaspor,Sorry, that's impossible. Ipcc's are signed by Apple. If you edit something the hash will be incorrect and it can't install anymore.
I think the problem indeed lies with the carriers. They have to update their ipcc's to make it possible.

Oct 23, 2014 8:14 AM in response to Jasporby Michael Dufranne1,It used to work under iOS7.1 because I did it to replace my 4G switch by a 3G one. Now, Apple may have patched that hole.

Oct 23, 2014 8:30 AM in response to Michael Dufranne1by robAsanderson,Michael, in my instance this is directly related to Apple, there is a bug somewhere within the software that does not allow the switch even with the latest carrier settings installed. I know this for a fact as I have stated before, my friend & I are on the same carrier, we have the same software build of iOS 8.1 installed, we have the same version of carrier settings installed, he has the new settings and I dont. The only difference is he has an iPhone 5 and I have an iPhone 5S.
I believe Jaspor has hit upon something that Apple may have overlooked, that is why his information, along with all of the diagnostics & screenshots Apple have asked of me, have been forwarded to the engineering team so they can work on a fix. for those affected in the U.S. it is almost certainly a carrier issue, things work very differently over here in the UK & Europe in terms of what carriers are allowed to restrict legally, but let's not get into that, I'm getting pretty sick of having to repeat myself til I'm blue in the face to get people to actually listen to what I'm saying.
Lets agree on this, if you believe your issue is carrier related, you'll approach your carrier for support, after all it's them you need a fix from, not Apple. I have already done this, it was the first thing I did. My carrier have assured me that this is not down to them, the case I pointed out above regarding my friend having different settings to mself proves this absolutely. I will therefore wait for a fix from Apple and keep you guys informed of my progress with them, how does that sound?

Oct 23, 2014 8:38 AM in response to robAsandersonby Michael Dufranne1,Hi RobAsanderson, I am not saying your explanation is wrong, it may well be the case. Although quite knowledgeable in IT, I don't work at Apple and it is indeed extremely hard to get precise and detailed information. My explanation may be wrong, but this is the only one I got also from Apple.
Anyway, in any case we have to wait for an update, either of iOS, carrier settings or perhaps in some cases, both.
Let's be patient... once again. God I love I.T..... not !

Oct 23, 2014 8:50 AM in response to Michael Dufranne1by robAsanderson,Haha, I share your sentiments on IT entirely Michael! It causes far too many issues daily to be worthwhile right?
Ypens ive resigned myself to waiting for a fix (from Apple). Out of interest, what device are you running & on what carrier in which location? It does seem that, for certain carriers at least, this issue is one for the carrier to fix, however this seems to be mainly over in the U.S.

Oct 23, 2014 9:33 AM in response to robAsandersonby Michael Dufranne1,I am on an iPhone 5S, running iOS 8.1.
I live in Belgium using the Proximus network

Oct 23, 2014 9:51 AM in response to Michael Dufranne1by robAsanderson,My first suggestion (given I have been attacked by others on another thread in the community) would be to get in touch with Proximus to rule out that they have not limited this option themselves, however given you are within the EU I would guess this is unlikely. Secondly I would suggest that as you are using an iPhone 5S your issue is similar to mine in that it has been an oversight in the software rollout and has something to do with devices running the A7 chipset or above. Either way if your carrier have not limited the settings, then you will (like the rest of us) have to wait for Apple to get to the cause of this issue, albeit a bug in the software or in the carrier settings packages (which are all signed by Apple anyway). Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment

Oct 23, 2014 1:46 PM in response to robAsandersonby janie_burmy,All I want to say is thank you thank you to you guys who are prepared to push Apple/carriers on this issue. I'm still fighting BT for a new router as my infinity wireless is playing up and so don't feel I've got the energy left to hassle Apple as well. I did try Apple and my network O2 (on the issue of poor signal strength on my 6 compared with my daughter's 5s and husband's 4s, neither on iOS8 versions, but I got nowhere - and yes, I converted the phone to use field signal numbers so it was accurate). So I'm exhausted. Thanks again and I'll eagerly await your updates (Apple's I'm not holding my breath).

Oct 23, 2014 3:46 PM in response to thebremnerby robAsanderson,Ok guys, I do now have an answer for you. Unfortunately you're all going to be rather disappointed as, at least in my opinion, it feels like a bit of a cop out from Apple Engineering but here you go: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6553?viewlocale=en_US
As you can see apparently we're all in the wrong expecting to see these new options/switches/toggles following the update, despite that being the clear meaning interpreted by many from the release notes. I have asked my tech to feed back to engineering regarding this, but ultimately the answer is if you're on a carrier who have launched 4G then tough, you're not getting the new toggles.
I know it's not the answer we were all hoping for, but it is the current official position from Apple. As such this is THE solution to this issue (If the OP would mark it as so if possible?)
I will keep pushing for the options we were all expecting to have to be given to us again, but in the meantime we have to accept that Apole clearly meant something completely different when they said 'Adds an option to select between 2G, 3G, or LTE networks for cellular data'.
Updates as always as/when/if I get them, but in the meantime apologies to you all

Oct 23, 2014 4:08 PM in response to robAsandersonby hawtboi,Figures. What else can you expect from crApple, anyway.

Oct 23, 2014 4:20 PM in response to robAsandersonby mbf199t,Thanks for the update Rob - that is very disappointing. either the person who wrote the update descriptions needs a slap, or they've just created that article so they don't have to fix what was almost certainly an oversight...
either way, if I were reading this, I'd go straight to the article and hit NO on the 'Was this helpful?'
