iTunes won't play songs. Nor even the song samples at the iTunes store.

My sound system is working fine. Commercial CDs play in WMP.

I downloaded latest version of iTunes along with Quicktime. Download/install: no problem. I tried to get some m4p songs I'd saved on a CD to load back into iTunes, and while 1 or 2 appeared in iTunes, they would not play. I click on the spkr icon next to the song...no response. They would not transfer from the CD to iTunes. I gave up trying. (Same thing happens at the Music Store with its 30 second samples.) Doesn't make any differene what song I select. My computer is working fine; I get on the net with no problem. I do not get any error messages. The Diagnosic check from iTunes shows everything normal re my computer settings and network settings. (I'm using XP).

I tried a "Repair" install of iTunes...didn't help. I uninstalled iTunes and re-downloaded the setup.exe file, then reinstalled iTunes. Didn't change anything.

At the moment I've no songs in iTunes--when I call iTunes up, I am taken directly to the Music Store where I have a current, functioning account. IS THAT NORMAL WHEN YOU'VE NOT SET UP A PLAYLIST? And am I correct that itunes uses Quicktime to play iTunes songs?

I have 3 CDs I made of iTunes songs. One was burned with Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5. Another was burned with XP itself. A third was burned with iTunes and it will play in my car CD Player and in WMP 11 in my computer. iTunes will NOT play any of the three. If I put a commercial music CD in my computer, iTunes loads all into itself the songs and will play them.

It's a problem when an uninstall and reinstall of iTunes does nothing. I also just ran a Repair Install of XP last night. Went mostly OK; I got a messsage: "Windows could not load the installer for tape controller." I clicked OK as I don't use any tape device. There was another message: "The CinePlayer Decoders have not yet been activated. You must activate the product before use. Please run the player that included these decoders in order to activate the product". Again I clicked OK. I don't know what those cine player decoders do or what a cine player is. Movies? I checked my movie files--they played fine in WMP. I did not copy the CDs (any of them) to my HDD before trying to get them into iTunes but...would that have mattered?

What to do? I would like to get my Music Store songs back into iTunes from my CDs. Hope a clean XP install is not necessary.
