Q: FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

I just came from the Apple store for an unrelated issue, and asked the technician about this popping issue with face time. He ran a diagnostic and we tested it at the bar, he said that it was a hardware issue. He quoted me about $50 placement for the speaker.

Yeah, my laptop's at the GB right now getting a new logic board... I just have a feeling hardware isn't the issue here, but I could be wrong.  Again, I'll update this thread when I get my laptop back.  I'd also be curious to hear if your speaker replacement does the trick.

I know this isn't going to "help" but... I have a late 2008 MBPro and have experienced this very IN-frequently over the last few OS releases since Lion (I think). Usually strange stuff like plugging in headphones and unplugging them, or hitting the volume keys, or going to System Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects and double-clicking on of the alerts did the trick. Sometimes resetting. This time (in 10.10.1) NOTHING worked. Literally anything I tried in this thread yielded no results. Yet, NOTHING as in "nothing" suddenly worked. My FaceTime audio worked without a hitch while looking up the issue. Macs don't screw up like Windows. No. When Macs screw up they screw up like some prankster. You lovable little b@stard you. Still, I'm glad I don't have to check for the dreaded "conflicting extensions" - anyone remember those circa the early '90's ~ System 6, 7, and 8?

Heh, I would not waste 50 bucks for that, unless they are willing to pay that back if the problems is not fixed. Two indicators why it most probably is not a hardware issue. First, this issue has risen quite suddenly simultaneously to a lot of users, which would indicate a software bug rather than hardware failure. Second, it is rare that a hardware failure that requires replacement part would repair itself, and with this issues a reboot solves the problem for awhile.

I really would have liked to see that diagnostic test result, did it really suggest that there is a hardware problem or was that fix solution just a random thought by the technician who had no clue what is the problem. It's horrible practice to offer solutions when the problem has not been even identified.

No, I wasn't going to have the the repair done unless it affected the entire computer. Since FaceTime is the only app having issues, I am not inclined at this point to throw money at the problem.

In the meantime, as a workaround, I've noticed that having iTunes playing music at the time I make (or receive) a FaceTime call will result in no popping noise.

Well, I just got my early 2011 MBP back after having the logic board replaced.  As I suspected, it did not resolve the issue.  So now they are going to replace both speakers.  I figure I'd just cover every possible base with the Genius Bar since they are offering to replace parts free of charge (well, I paid for a repair a few months ago, and they are including all of this in that repair, even though it was outside the warranty for the repair, so that's nice of them.)  Eventually, they'll figure it out.

I have tried this several times. Works well for awhile then the problem is back.

    Mid 2010 15" 2.53 MBP.

I've had this issue since the final releases of Mavericks 10.9.4/5, though much more prevalent in Yosemite.

I am both reassured to see everyone here shares my issue, and dismayed that it still exists at this stage.

I have the same issue; two years ago I did upgrade to 10.10.1 from 10.9.5 and the problem appeared!

    No solutions yet?

I would also like to add to this thread that I have a MBP Mid-Year 2009 and have the same issue on Yosemite.

Same issue but only when the MacBookPro is connected to The Apple Thanderbolt Display 27.

The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine.

    Headphone ok.

I also have the same issue with FaceTime cracking since updating to Yosemite. MBP Early 2011 13."  Agree with all that a software update to fix would be nice soon.

I have the very same issue. Random clicking and sound disappearance on hangout and skype, which makes them unusable.

Clearly this isn't resolved yet, which is super frustrating. What's the right way to bring Apple's attention to this then???
