Q: FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

I hate to say this, but same problem here with my MBP Early 2011… I refuse to believe it's a hardware issue.

Thanks m_elsawah, I just installed the Soundsource app, so I'm testing if it does the trick. Also I have the same question with Alex_Florence, what's the difference with the Option+Click over the Sound icon in the top bar?

After approximately one month running Windows 8.1 full-time on this Early '11 MBP, I've not experienced a single issue with the audio when using iTunes, Spotify, Skype, Google Hangouts, etc. Not one.

Hey Just adding to the query, MacBook Pro Mid-2009, This is definitely not a hardware issue. Face Time worked fine for me, when it all stared was when the new IOS for iPhones was put out the right after the Yosemite upgrade. Never had a problem with FaceTime until then. Also if someone is reading this, Can't explain random immediate shutdowns after disconnecting from the wall and closing the lid on the computer. I'm sure my message probably will get bounced but its truly annoying to have to do a restart just to use FaceTime or be some where else in the house and open the lid and have the computer shutdown and can't restart without plugging it in. Even when battery life is 80% plus.

Please don't tell me about this that and the other. Been using macs since the mac plus came out well aware of resetting this and that. APPLE, fix the problem - Also has anyone else noticed that certain applications remain in the Force Quit menu even after they have been "Quitted"

Annoyed. Still a Faithful mac user though!

ALSO if your reading - I think Firefox is doing a better job by incorporating basically everything web driven into their browser - APPLE could use a lesson!

Same problem happened to my Macbook Pro 15 Late 2011 i7 2.4 8gb ram,Yosemite 10.10.2 with 256gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD inside. The noise begins sometimes and I can't hear anything but just the crackling noise. For example when I am emptying the recycle bin normally is a special sound but instead of it I have this annoying noise. Sometimes I can just start a youtube clip and the sounds comes back to normal but sometimes nothing works so I have to reboot the system. This is very irritating!

Same thing happened to me. Early 2011 Macbook Pro with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD on Yosemite. Popping sound during FaceTime. Ended up using my iPad for the session. Really annoying.

After a clean install of Yosemite, which I really didn't want to do, I fixed it until yesterday (10.10.2). The speakers are going crazy with popping during facetime. I can sometimes hear the other end speak through it though, that is new.

FaceTime has been useless for more than a year no from this bug and before that, even dating more than 2 years back, it didn't work due to another issue, every since ML. Crazy.

I have a early 2011 MBP with 16 GB RAM and a 750 GB Hybrid drive running OS/X 10.10.2... FaceTime is the problem... Mine is version 3.0 and I am guessing that is the latest version... I have the already reported problem where it continues to ring after the person answers... Have the already reported problem where it is working fine - audio/etc with headphones, and when I take the headphones out of the headphone jack, get the clicking sound and no other sound - no ring, no voice... SKYPE works just fine, so this is a FaceTime problem... makes me want to use SKYPE more than FACETIME, in general... and rebooting fixes the problem, for awhile, and then the problem returns...

Question: Has anyone had their logic board replaced for this issue? If so, what was the result? --Just curious, thanks.

This problem is NOT related to the logic board or any other hardware.  Reverting back to Mavericks will fix this issue.  It's a Yosemite bug.

No, I get that--I was just curious if anyone had actually gone through with the logic board replacement.

It worked for a while, but the noise came back answering a call from Facetime. So Soundsource app doesn't work for me…

At this stage a hardware problem is discarded, so the only hope is that Apple fix this nasty bug in Yosemite… I just installed an SSD in my MacBook Pro Early 2011, so as you may guess, I'm not planning to buy another one for a while. With 16GB RAM, new battery and now the SSD, my MacBook Pro works like a charm (except for the noise) for what I do.

    Apple pleeeasseee…

I've been having this issue-like most of you-since I updated to Yosemite. I finally decided to google it hoping it wasn't a hardware issue and found this thread. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm running Yosemite 10.10.1 on a late 2008 15" MBP. I just saw the 10.10.2 update today. It doesn't say anything about the FaceTime fix...hopefully they've included it!
