Q: FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

MBP 15" Early 2011 with 10.10.1, Facebook audio is still broken, external bluetooth speaker works fine. Skype works fine with internal speaker. Apple, please fix it asap, it's your latest OS, your supported hardware, your native app, the bug doesn't make any sense and shouldn't have happened in the first place. Feels like Apple's attention to detail is only at their high level when it comes to appearance and marketing.

So, I claimed a reboot fixed it... It didn't, I just only have the problem when talking macbook to macbook. It works when talking to an iPad. I did a clean install of Yosmite to get rid of a FaceTime bug introduced in 10.8 :s. The bug is very bad indeed Apple!

Mid-2009 MBP here and I have the same issue and it DRIVES me crazy.  It works every now and again but lately more times than not, it has been glitching and not allowing sound at all to be send or received by my MBP.  Doesn't matter if the person calls me or if I call them, popping/clicking sound like a bad speaker connection and then boom no audio.  I almost know now when I make a call if I hear the sound to just give up on the call all together.

I have the same issue too, I wish Apple would pull their finger out and solve the problem.

I'm having the same issues with the popping sound just since I've updated to Yosemite, nothing I've tried has fixed it. MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

10.10.1 update (seed version/14B23) appears to fix it.

    Earlier seeds (14B17) did not.

    We'll see...

Same issue here... I try alot of things, including reinstall Yosemite  ( Final Release, note beta-program... ), and speaker stay clicking. Another curiosity, in Parallels Desktop, running Window$ XP I have the same issue a long time and I thought it was a virtual machine problem on instalation..

My MB Pro is a 15" dual graphics, early 2011.

Same problem. But also, have the crackling when I am using handoff to answer phone calls from my iPhone 6 on my computer. Face time is a disaster though I have to avoid it all together on the macbook pro late 2011.

I found a workaround that works on my MBP 15' late 2011 at least:

Open iTunes, play any song and leave it playing. After doing this, the popping noise disappeared and the audio of FaceTime goes back to normal. Has anyone tried this before? The music playing won't get in the way of FaceTime as the system will turn down the volume from iTunes to very weak level.

I discovered this when I tried to play with the settings of FaceTime that I simply got ****** off by this bug. Then as I changed the ringtone, the sound from the other end went through, and popping noise came back after the ringtone stopped playing.

In fact I discovered the same thing 2weeks ago or a little less.

However, in my case, the iTunes volume does not automatically reduce anymore when I launch FaceTime... But it's fine if I just launch a songs without sounds (using the bar in iTunes, not the global volume).

However, it's clear that it is not a viable solution; So what ? Because it's Apple should we tell "ok, it's normal, not their fault" or I don't know what more ?? If it was happening on windows everybody (and probably also me) would laugh on Microsoft... Really, I'm fed up ! As everybody here probably...!

According one of the post above, the issue will be resolved in the upcoming 10.10.1? Hopefully it won't take too long for beta testing.
