Q: FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

Yes - it appears the latest versions of 10.10.1 seed have sorted it...  I think.

    I've slept/awoken and used Facetime a bit.

My initial hypothesis is holding true - somehow Continuity was handing off phone calls from iPhone > computer, with or without Wi-fi enabled, and when Apple went to cripple it, they took out FaceTime along with it.

Just an update, this is still an issue for me with the 10.10.1 update and now my fix (reset the core audio daemon) isn't working.

The new OS X 10.10.1 didn't fix the problem...

Whenever I go into FaceTime I get a clicking sound and I am unable to hear the other person I'm calling.  They can hear and see me - I am now using Yosemite as my operating system.  I know there is nothing wrong with my computer.  I took my computer to the Apple store TWICE in Freehold NJ and FaceTime worked fine there.  Prior to going there I disconnected my router (Netgear N600) and then waited a few minutes and reconnected it.  I then tried FaceTime again and I could hear the other person's voice faintly but still had the clicking sound.  After another retry - no voice and clicking sound.

I'm thinking that it might be the router - is it possible for:

    1.  A router to go bad?  OR

    2.  Is the router I'm using (Netgear N600) not able to support Yosemite???

This is disappointing news. Maybe this thread needs 50 pages more of replies to get their attention.

If your overall internet connection is fine and FaceTime is the only problem, it's very unlikely to be a router's problem - routers cannot pick what data to transmit...it's more likely your neighbor is using some high-end jamming device against you when you FactTime! Seriously, try put it on earphones and see if it makes a difference.

What's even better than the crackling noise is that when I get to page 5 of these comments, I can't like or reply - it reverts to "guest".

So even their discussions site is crap.

Just got an update from Apple - concerning the "reliability of wi-fi" etc.  -  FaceTime still not working after installing the update.

I've upgraded to 10.10.1 today and FaceTime (and Google Hangout)  still clicks, with no audio coming through.  Anyone else also have problems with Hangout??  It's interesting that FaceTime works at the Apple store.  I'm using Netgear N-150 which worked before 10.10.  Maybe it's a Netgear compatibility issue..  Any thoughts?

There is a another post on this stage stating a similar situation. Maybe it only works fine on Airport? But it doesn't quite make sense to me.

    Okay, here's what I got:

    1) Facetime/Google Hangout - Works fine when I have external speakers or ear buds plugged in.  Still get clicking and no audio when using the internal speakers.  My external speakers are using the digital output port and my ear buds are nothing special.  Both work fine.

    2) Skype - Works fine, period.  Audio is not an issue no matter what my configuration is.

I was video chatting with my son who has a Mac Mini (10.10.1) and he is having the exact same results that I have on my MacBook Pro (also at 10.10.1).  Both systems are connected via Wifi.  At least I'm now able to video chat.

Interesting...  At the moment I believe (at least for me) that this issue has to do with the internal speakers and how Facetime/Hangout is interfacing with them.

Side note: iTunes and Quicktime work fine on the internal speakers.

It has nothing to do with router, as i have the same issue on every router ( i travel with mac between work ( Netgear) and home Airport Extreme). It does not happen all the time, but it does happen after 2-3 successful calls. Having another partition on HD and installing Maverics on it makes problem none-existent. I used Maverics partition for 7 days and never experienced this issue.

I second this - I have a current-generation AirPort Extreme with latest firmware (7.7.3).  Issue persists.

Updated to 10.10.1, still same problem. Popping or clicks. Using Time Capsule. MacBook Pro 15" early 2011.

PS: The ITunes "kind of work around" mentioned before makes the problem go away while play music.
