Q: FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

I'm sure everyone read my previous posts but right now everything is working fine.  Before my FaceTime had now audio and clicking sound - now it's fine.  Right after that my videos on YouTube wouldn't play - today all is well.  I didn't do anything to my computer and I'm not planning to as long as everything is running correctly.

If anyone has any idea what the problem could have been please post.

Did you update your iPhone to at least 8.1?

I am running iOS 8.1 and have had these issues.
To be blunt, I don't follow your rationale. It is not the iOS with different hardware that has the problem. It is the FaceTime on OSX. I cannot see how updating iOS on different device and platform could fix a problem in MBP OSX.

I was thinking it had something to do with Continuity, that and the fact that the issue stopped once the iOS devices were updated.

That's why I asked if anyone else was still experiencing this after updating to iOS 8.1.

    Thanks for your feedback.

    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)

    Running 10.10.1  iPhone running 8.1.1

    Same issues here.

FaceTime from macbook  = broken (same popping issues)

Continuity phone calling out from macbook = broken (same popping issues)

Temporary fixes with pram, with playing iTunes music and then making the "call"...all work to varying degrees but not good and not permanent.

Apple PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP. Such an important feature for me. Ugh!!!

If you are affected by this issue as I am, I strongly recommend sending detailed feedback to Apple.

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

It does not appear to be not affecting all Macs but merely some. I recommend mentioning the vintage (e.g. year/make/model) of your Mac when submitting feedback.

This may be "old" news however looks like a reason that apple may not be responding to some of these issues is because it looks like a bunch of the rigs effected on this thread don't have the newer bluetooth tech (mine included.) All of the handoff and continuity features "require" it. Of course, this doesn't explain why FaceTime wouldn't work.

Just thought i'd throw this in for good measure.

My theory - posted much earlier in this or another thread - is that Apple forcibly crippled Continuity when it was working on machines it shouldn't have.

Under Yosemite betas prior to public beta 5 or so, I was successfully able to receive calls on my early-2011 MacBook Pro - with or without Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.  It ran over my home network; Wi-Fi was enabled on my iPhone 5s.

Then, some time after that, the clicking started, and has remained since.

    And now affects FaceTime.

The "popping" noise on the right speaker does not happen with FaceTime on my wife's retired Late '09 Unibody White Macbook. I've tried replicating the issue for days and FaceTime works fine, handoff works fine too.

However, only my nearly 2 years younger Early '11 MacBook Pro makes the popping noise consistently when making any outbound call; Handoff iPhone calls outbound or regular Mac-to-Mac FaceTime calls. Skype and Google Hangouts (Chrome) do not replicate the issue; Google Hangouts via Skype (Hangouts Plugin) does, at times, replicate the issue.

PRAM reset does nothing but SMC reset does fix it temporarily.

My guess is a bug, one that likely affects specific audio chipsets.

I've been following this discussion for some time now and because of Apple's protracted fix response time, I felt the need to provide some additional insights:

    • I have a late 2011 15" MBP with the call handoff crackeling/popping noise (and since OS X 10.10.1 & iOS 8.1.1 updates, I now have a crashing OS X contacts app--more on that later).
    • At least one reply included the fact that the poster had contacted Apple tech support and learned Apple new nothing of the call handoff crackeling/popping issue. Well, my comment to Apple is I hope you're reading/skimming/filtering these user discussions--this may be the main reason why you're not aware of this very irritating and feature debilitating issue. Making proper strategic use of this information would enabled you to hedge off the length of this discussion and provide a proper fix sooner.
    • Unfortunately, none of the prior proposed work-arounds continue to eliminate the issue (not a reflection on those very helpful suggestions, but more of a reflection that Apple needs to step up more quickly and get this feature working correctly for all supported devices).
    • I was really hopeful that OS X 10.10.1 & iOS 8.1.1 were the ticket for fixing this issue, however, the crackeling/popping issue remains. And, now I'm experiencing an added measure of workflow failure: Now, EVERY time I perform a handoff call from my OS X Contacts app (clicking on blue handset icon), not only do I still get the crackeling/popping noise, but I now have the added bonus of my OS X Contacts app unexpectedly quitting (one has to question Apple's testing suite and procedures). Oh, one important (and possibly helpful) tidbit of information: My OS X Contacts app accesses my contacts on an Exchange server (EWS) at my i-net service provider. Also, prior to OS X 10.10.1 & iOS 8.1.1 I experienced the crackeling/popping noise, but my OS X Contacts app never unexpectely quit (not sure we're making progress in the right direction).
    • Here's and interesting observation: Occasionally, after I've disconnected my MPB from my two external displays and take it on the road, upon my return, the crackeling/popping disappears. However, I have noticed the crackeling/popping always comes back upon a restart.
    • So, Apple I hope you're reading these discussions because their chock full of valuable data that can help you finally provide a proper handoff call feature to those of us with slightly older Yosemite-supported Mac devices.

As I posted previously I have no other apple devices other than my Macbook Pro - I had the crackling sound and no sound when using FaceTime for about a week.  Visited the Apple store twice - no one was aware of this issue - called Apple support - ditto.

Without doing anything else my FaceTime problem was cleared up - no problem making FaceTime calls for at least a week now.

I did experience a problem with YouTube videos after that - no picture - no sound.  Videos on other websites worked fine.  Again, all of a sudden after about 2 days of no YouTube - that problem was no more!

I didn't do anything but unplug and restart my router a few times - I doubt that the router was the problem.

I posted a while ago, but I would just like to clarify that I am having this issue with general FaceTime, not online when using continuity features with my phone.

Same issue, on MBP Late 2011 with Yosemite 10.10.1

When I try to call on my MBP using APP contacts and my iPhone I had a lot of noise, I can't ear nothing except a sounds like "POP, POP, POP" that still sounds a few seconds after I hang out the call.

    I Hope Aplle fix it

    Thanks!!!
