If you want to help us Star Traveler, can you please report yourself as a annoyance in this thread for telling people that they have no problems... As someone has pointed out in this thread, the terms of use of this forum doesn't allow for trolling. Also you may want to have a look at the difference between a fix and a workaround.

if a moderator read this, it would be great to add a way to give negative points to users, that way it can help to know who we can trust.

PS to Traveler : no needs to reply, I won't read anything you post. Thanks for keeping this thread clean.

"The best course of action to take at this moment is time is to simply upgrade your hardware."

If or when the acronym dictionaries add AA: Apple Apologist as a new entry, that comment in this context would be an excellent example IMO.

BTW, I'm one of the large number of contributors to this thread, and I have the latest iPad Air.

"In short, it’s time for an upgrade no matter what. After all, who doesn’t like to own newer gadgets, right?"

I beg your pardon? Who do you think you are to make such statement?

First of all, you should note that the bug affecting 8.1 concerns iPads which are currently on sale - thus your comment relating to the age of the devices is inappropriate.

In my case it is affecting my wife's iPad mini, but only since 8.1 - there was no issue under 8.0.2.

And the bug is not a simple performance issue but it makes the usage of Safari almost impossible! Hence, this is definitely a more serious issue!

Here's what Oliver Haslam wrote that I've seen is 100% true over the last 30 years ...

"Software updates might pump life into older hardware for a short moment of time, but eventually we all know that our aging gadgets will eventually give up on us."

AND there's absolutely nothing that one can do to get around this.

Thats just a bunch of bull. The iPad 2 with IOS 7 didn't need any new life. It worked just fine. It worked so well that I have not even considered buying another version unless I dropped mine and had to look at a replacement. There was no way it was ever going to "give up on me".

If Apple had let us know that the iPad 2 was not capable of handling an IOS 8 upgrade I don't think anyone would have been upset. If they would admit their goof and let us all downgrade back to IOS 7 I think we would all be happy as well. My iPhone 4s continues to work fine with IOS 7 and my wife surfs the web easily with her iPad 2 with IOS 7 as well while I sit here struggling to type this simple message with IOS 8.

I still am holding out hope that 8.1.1 will give me back the enjoyment I used to get from my iPad 2, but recent events really make wonder if such a thing is possible or even desired by Apple.

That statement has absolutely and inevitably held true over the last 30+ years of computers and the recent computer-type portable devices. There's absolutely no disputing it ... and in fact, it's sort of been enshrined in a "computer law" that has been affirmed for a long time. It's called "Moore's Law". It's been in effect for over half a century.

Again ... the statement from that article writer that I affirmed and agreed with is the following ...

"Software updates might pump life into older hardware for a short moment of time, but eventually we all know that our aging gadgets will eventually give up on us."

No matter how much you may want to deny this, it's not based on the whims and desires of individuals or based upon Apple, but is based upon the realities of the computer industry.

Apple has affirmed that the iPad 2 is capable of running iOS 8 and it STILL confirms that to the present. In addition to that, there are many iPad 2 users who have said on these forums that they are running fine on iOS 8. And for the few who have initially reported some problems, they have said they were able to get their iPad 2 model running fine again. A good number of those were people whom I gave advice to and they followed through and has them running fine again. But, as I have said many times before, there is not just one solution for iPad owners as there are a variety of issues and I just provided one or two answers for a group of them. I've lost count now, as to how many iPad users have reported back to me that things are working fine for them now.

In addition to all of the above, Apple is selling the iPad 2 model on their online store website and it can be bought with a two-year AppleCare contract, which means that Apple will back it up and service it for another two years from now. And that iPad 2 that Apple will sell you today is able to upgrade to iOS 8 and run fine ... keeping in mind that Apple affirms that it can -AND- Apple will BACK IT UP with their two-year AppleCare contract!

Hate to keep feeding you since is is obvious you are just repeating the party line. But the problem is tablets are not needed to be power houses. They just need to be able to surf the web, respond to emails, view pics, show videos, play music, and perform a few other actions. I have been through so many desk tops and lap tops over the years that I wouldn't even want to count them... But as far as tablets the iPad 2 was a do everything I will ever need product. That stinks for a company that makes its living off of new sales but destroying a product by rolling out an upgrade it can't handle isn't good customer relations.

If it were really so capable then I doubt this community would be flooded with issues. I will also bet if you separated those who you think you helped fix their issues vs those who got to a point that they are able to tolerate the situation you might be surprised on the lackluster success of your efforts. Like turning on reduce motion.. It doesn't fix an issue. It masks the issue. No more food from me for you.

PLease ignore any tyoos, blank spaces or other mistakes... I am running IOS 8. But its guaranteed by Apple. Dosn't that make you feel great!

There's no party line here ... the fact of Moore's Law has stood up over decades (despite people wondering how much longer it can ...) and from the time of the 1984 Macintosh to the present portable devices, that fact is true and is outside of any "party line" because it pertains to the entire computer industry.

That stinks for a company that makes its living off of new sales but destroying a product by rolling out an upgrade it can't handle isn't good customer relations.

But the fact remains that it can handle it and Apple backs that up, right now, by giving a two-year AppleCare contract on the iPad 2 model that they will sell you TODAY ... meaning Apple is going to cover THAT DEVICE you buy today for another two years - GUARANTEED!

LOL ... go to the hospitals in the USA and you'll find them "flooded" with sick people. But that doesn't mean the USA has all sick people or even a majority of sick people, but only a very very small minority of sick people are represented in the hospitals, as compared to the overall condition of the people in the USA.

This forum is a "computer hospital" for those users who want to try and fix something themselves on their own devices ... :-) ...

Same here.

Reset my iPad 3 to factory defaults - still agonizing user experience. Not any better than the updated installation before. Sluggish, unresponsive, links not working. Has been previously reported around here ad nauseam. As I wasn't inclined to rebuild my iPad manually (what for when performance was already in the gutter?) I restored it from a local iTunes backup. At leaast that didn't cause any further deteriorations...

Also tried a few of the commonly suggested fixes like turning iCloud off, resetting the device, disabling animations and minimizing Safari tabs among others. If there's any effect at all it's not consistent and not persistent. I have a little experience in computer hardware evaluation and to me it just looks as if the older iDevices are simply lacking the RAM to run iOS 8 properly. But there even seem to be issues with newer devices, so I might be wrong.

But so far it seems that there's no real solution - unless Apple provides either an iOS 8 release that brings back 7.1,2's fluidity or starts signing 7.1.2 again for anything older than iPad Air and iPhone 6. But they won't do the latter - too much loss of face.

SSo discussed in the last two months now ( yes I have 8.1 not 8.01/2 ) and as far as I am concerned Apple owe me a massive discount on a new device. Steve jobs must be turning in his grave. I have an old back up 3GS, a 5 a 5s and an iPad air. I feel like apple have totally **** on me and many others and I am seriously considering buying Samsung and switching to android. I have been an iman since day one and unless I am compensated for a device I cannot use, and a personal apology, I will cut my losses and be off.
