Feb 3, 2015 12:56 AM in response to D_M_Gby noremacniai,A new model! Why?
The only thing "wrong" with older models is directly attributable to Apple's scr3w1ng around with the OS.
My wife's iPad 3 running iOS 7.1.2 is as fast as the day it was bought - and a d@mn sight faster than my iPad 3 running iOS 8.1.3!!
So tell me what is the issue here? - Older hardware OR newer software?
-
Feb 3, 2015 2:22 AM in response to noremacniaiby Geoff37 ,MY experience with 8.1.3 is a slight improvement in responsiveness but all the old Safari issues remain. Apple asked me to send a log and stack to them when a freeze occured, which i sent a few days ago. I am not holding my breath.

Feb 3, 2015 2:24 AM in response to Geoff37by markm49,Seriously - just try disabling Javascript. I have done this on a number of older iOS devices and the difference is night and day. Apple have a problem in the Javascript engine.

Feb 3, 2015 4:02 AM in response to markm49by Geoff37 ,I Have a number of web sites bookmarked that invariably cause problems, disabling java does not fix unfortunately but thanks for the suggestion.

Feb 3, 2015 3:32 PM in response to markm49by noremacniai,I grant you that disabling JavaScript does improve some page load speeds but, as I've mentioned way back, you lose all JavaScript functionality and quite a number of websites render crankily or just don't work properly- Try BBC News - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/

Feb 6, 2015 11:49 PM in response to Phix174by StRegisGuy,I am very disappointed with Apple. 8.1 Safari is a huge blunder and a Apple should bury their head in the sand after releasing this sorry excuse of a browser. I am going to give Apple 2 weeks to get this disaster fixed, and if they don't fix it, I will be forced to pull all my iPads that my service and install techs are currently using and replace them with a different product.

Feb 7, 2015 1:22 AM in response to StRegisGuyby noremacniai,I'd never really considered the business aspect of all this.
As a home user the iPad has always been just a toy, but I can now see that a crippled Safari becomes a money loser for business users!
If that's the case then a switch to another manufacturer is imperative as I can't see Apple fixing this anytime soon - indeed if ever at all!

Feb 7, 2015 2:55 PM in response to noremacniaiby Geoff37 ,- THe sad fact is that ios8 will not run smoothly on any device with a processor below an A7. There are major bugs in Safari that appear on all devices, such as pages reloading, but they are far less annoying on the faster processors as they recover quickly and very rarely totally freeze.
- gen1 ipad minis with A5 processors and ios8 installed are still being sold so Apple have a duty to fix these problems but seem unwilling or incapable of doing the right thing.

Feb 7, 2015 4:14 PM in response to Geoff37by noremacniai,Good point Geoff.
i think the Apple mindset is "thank you vey much for your money, but now we need to make more, so whatever your problems you can £u(k off!"

Feb 9, 2015 1:10 AM in response to Geoff37by noremacniai,Hi Geoff, picking up on your point about Apple still flogging iPad 1 minis on their store.
Here's what they have to say about the A5 chip; Powerful processing and fast graphics make everything quick, from launching apps to browsing the web. And its power-efficient design delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.
Well, what does that say about Apple?
If I were in the States I'd want to be part of any class action against Apple for misleading me into buying an iPad 1 mini,

Feb 9, 2015 1:14 AM in response to Geoff37by markm49,Hi Geoff,
Actually this isn't true - I have just purchased two new iPhone 5c's with A6 processors for my daughters and they run smooth and with no problems - there is something not optimised for the A5 chip - in my experience anyway.
I have a 5S phone and that flies - like you say the faster processors could just be hiding the inefficient code.

Feb 9, 2015 2:51 AM in response to noremacniaiby Geoff37 ,I have a vision impairment so use the built in Voice Over feature in ios. This puts extra load on the cpu.
Devices with an A5 or A6 chip worked well withVoice Over and ios7 but are almost unusable with ios8, the slow responses clearly show the older chips are struggling with ios8.
My mini with A7 chip works reasonably smoothly, but has the usual Safari bugs.
I guess it depends what the ipad is used for and what performance expectations are.i wonder how many gen1 minis have been returned as faulty?

Feb 9, 2015 3:23 AM in response to momolorientby tburzio,I fixed my WiFi problems on Xfinity. There is a problem with one or more settings in their modem that makes the Apple devices freeze up in Safari. Luckily, Comcast changed it from the factory defaults, so you can go back pretty easy. No changes on the Apple side.
1) Unplug the power from your personal router.
2) Press the reset button on the back of your still-running Xfinity modem with a pen for a good long and slow count of 30 seconds, then let go. This will load the factory defaults.
3) Go away for at least 5 minutes, more if possible.
4) Plug your personal router back in.
THats it. Before, Safari would get stuck loading pages, getting worse and worse until it would stop responding. I'd have to cycle power on my routers just to get anything for an hour or so. After, it's been working great for weeks now.

Mar 6, 2015 12:31 AM in response to tburzioby noremacniai,Can I assume, from the lack of further postings, that everyone is now accepting/happy with the degraded performance iOS 8.x has brought to our devices?
I wish I could be so forgiving! - It's just that every time I use my iPad to surf the web it just opens up old wounds!
I guess all the execs at Apple must believe " WE'RE BIG and you're small" and that's the natural order of things?

Mar 7, 2015 2:33 PM in response to noremacniaiby jgc123,Not happy at all .I'm accepting by not letting them into my billfold again.
