Q: How are Aperture and Yosemite getting along so far?

How are Aperture and Yosemite getting along so far?

Hi guys,

Is it OK for Aperture users to take the plunge and update to Yosemite, or is it wiser to wait for kinks to be worked out first? I didn't find any reference to this matter so far on this forum or on the web. I may have mort worded it correctly.

Thanks for responding,

Raphael

Also,

Why do I constantly run into the statement: "You are not allowed to create or update this content" when I click on "Post"? So annoying ....

So far Aperture 3.6 in Yosemite ignores all edits and adjustments made on my iPhone 6 photo or camera apps.

To replicate the problem you could edit one or more photos in your iPhone. Then import your adjusted photos to Aperture. You will see the original photo without the adjustments you did in your iPhone.

Also if you try syncing back your photos from your mac to your iPhone via itunes NONE of the photos will keep the original adjustments.

Thank you Léonie. I never used beta versions of anything so I ought to be OK.

But I'll wait a bit to find out whether there are more problems posted here regarding Yosemite and Aperture.

It would be useful if people posting here with problems post again to tell us all is well, and why or how.

That is a feature of iOS 8, not a bug, unfortunately. Downloading via USB will import the contents of the camera roll. Previously you could save the edited photos to the camera roll and then import them this way, but that is now not possible. So importing using a USB connection will only give you the original photos without edits, see this Apple Support document:

iPhoto and Aperture don't have edits to photos you import from iOS 8 devices

Not an outcome I desire.  Has anyone published a flow-chart of the now complex interaction between iDevices and Aperture/iPhoto databases?  By my count we now have at least three paths that files follow: iCloud, Photo Stream, and direct import.

I think Joe Kissel addresses (some of) this in his new Take Control book.  I don't have the book, and have not upgraded to Yosemite.

Thank you leonie for answering my biggest mystery of the last month!

Hard to believe this is actually a "feature".

I have now activated iCloud Photo Sharing and will "try" to remember that I have to move there (MANUALLY) every adjusted photo I will ever make in my iPhone's camera / photo app...anyway... thats another topic I'm happy it was not related to Aperture + Yosemite.

I opened this topic earlier today looking for an answer. If you could please post your answer there i will check it as answered. ;-)

    cheers,

    Juan

PS... the slo-mo effect is also lost after sync... shall I guess that's also a feature?

Apple should have kept iOS 8 in the Beta state, until the integration with MacOS X will be complete. There are simply no good workflows for using the mobile devices with a Mac for photo editing now.

I have the same slow to load issues & the "not allowed to create etc"when trying to post. I have never had a single problem with Aperture since v1 until now and it not worth using its soooooo slow!!

    Tried everything, still the same.

Also where have versions gone? When I edited it became versions 1 right there in the filmstrip. Not any more.

I just upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks, and Aperture 3.6 from 3.5.1. Started Aperture with my 3.5.1 data file and everything seemed to work fine. I then tried to update my Aperture Vault. Got the spinning pizza cursor for what seemed like 30 seconds. Then got a warning "an inconsistency in your database has been detected..." So I did as instructed, shut down Aperture and restarted. Aperture then went through its repair and reopened the data. Projects and photos seemed to be intact.

Then tried again to backup to the same Aperture Vault. Same thing with "inconsistent data file." Quit Aperture and opened the same data file with iPhoto. It also went through the consistency repair step. Quit iPhoto and reopened Aperture to make another attempt to backup to my Aperture Vault. Same "inconsistency" message.

Have a couple backup Aperture Library files so I haven't LOST any photos YET. I'll have to do some more playing around when I have some time.

But there MAY be some serious problems with Aperture 3.6 and Yosemite.

    Have you checked your preferences?

Do you still have the option "Preferences > Advanced > Create New Version when making Adjustments" enabled? Is the Preference " General > Automatically stack new versions on"?

I am still having the same issues as well.  Aperture 3.6 keeps quitting unexpectedly form "inconsistencies".  Repairing and rebuilding the library don't help.  I have not had a chance to play around and try anything beyond that.  I tried iPhoto and that worked for a few minutes, but now iPhoto as well is shutting down with the same inconsistancies.  Please post if you figure anything out with Aperture and Yosemite.  At this point if for those who have not upgraded yet I would advise against it.

    This is a bad situation.

Everyone with a problem ought to send a message to Aperture http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html

FWIW, Aperture 3.6 and Yosemite are working fine here on my late 2013 iMac. My library has over 22,000 images and response is fine. In fact, I would occasionally get a crash in prior versions when I used the magnifying glass and haven't seen one yet.
