.scc file format/syntax

I have some line 21 captioning data files that have been provided in a few different formats, including .asc and .scc. However, when I try to import them in DVDSP as line 21 captions, dvdsp does not recognize the file format - it allows to me to select the file, but will not import the captions.

I have been working around this by massaging the data into a text file which I can import as subtitles, however, it would be nice to import the data as line 21, per the client's request.

My question is this - can I somehow manipulate the .asc file into a valid .scc file (using ms word) that dvdsp will be able to import as line 21? If anyone out there has a small sample of a valid .scc file, I'd like to try using the headers and format of this file to convert my data into a file dvvdsp can import.

Thanks y'all!!

The answer is no, being that a .scc file, (Scenarist_SCC V1.0) is a hexadecimal text file and requires dedicated software to generate the file.

You can open .scc file in a text editor to check and see if the file really is a .scc file, it should begin like this:

Scenarist_SCC V1.0

00:00:00:00 9420 9420 942c 942f

00:00:06:09 9420 915e 97a2 9137 9137 9137 9137

00:00:09:16 9420 942c 942f

The company that gave you this program, should also be responsible for giving you a true .scc file, not a subtitle file.

I use Mac Caption Pro to generate all of my captioning files, but it is very expensive, ($5000.00) this is why you should contact the company or a captioning service, if you don't have the funds to purchase your own captioning software.

Thanks Kelly -

That's what I figured. I opened the provided .scc files and indeed they do appear to contain a bunch of hex gobbledygook, although the headers and times appear to be in hex as well, which is probably why it was not recognized by dvdsp. Oh well. Creating the subtitles from the text file works fine. I just wanted to do it the "right" way.

Now if I could only wave a magic wand and change all the CAPTIONING to sentence case...
