Q: Random Blue Screen Crash with 5S and iOS 8.1

Since upgrading to iOS 8.0 my iPhone 5S randomly gets blue screens and then crashes and goes into a loop of boot up, blue screen, reboot, blue screen, reboot...etc. My 5S did this again today when during my upgrade to iOS 8.1 via USB and I was forced to do a factory restore on it. The blue screen is still occurring after the restore and 8.1 upgrade. Is this a known issue? I was hoping this was going to get fixed with 8.1 but unfortunately, it doesn't look like it has.

It doesn't appear to be a software issue. I went to the Apple Store and they tried, unsuccessfully to restore the phone. Another rep looked at it and said it looked like a bad logic board - which could mean the board itself, a chip or bad memory. Either way it was not serviceable. I always equated Apple with quality. Should a phone suffer logic board issues after a year of use? No. The sad thing is that I am stuck with having to pay $269 dollars since I am still another year from the end of my contract. I think apple should have a 1 year warranty for entire phone, and then an additional year for internal (i.e. not button related) parts that cannot be damaged under normal wear and tear use.

Ironically the rep said that he had never seen a problem like mine before. The girl next to me had an iphone 5s also, who also needed a new phone due to a 'hardware' issue although she had 2 weeks left on her warranty. The rep even said he is a little concerned about his equipment.

EXACT SAME ISSUE HERE!! I WAS ON iOS 7.0.1 WHEN THE ISSUE STARTED (64GB/5S) AND DID A FULL RESTORE AND UPDATE TO 8.1.2 WHICH DIDN'T HELP.

APPLE I THINK IT'S PRETTY UNACCEPTABLE THAT THERE HAS BEEN NO REPLY AS OF YET. THIS IS NOT A SMALL PROBLEM WE'RE HAVING HERE AND A MAJOR INCONVENIECE. UNFORTUNATELY WITH REPORTEDLY NO HELP FROM GENIUS BARS, NETWORK PROVIDERS OR DISCUSSION FORUMS , THIS REALLY MAKES ME LEAN TOWARDS LEAVING APPLE AS A LOYAL CUSTOMER.

EVEN A REPLY SAYING/ADMITTING 'WE'RE STILL LOOKING INTO THIS' IS BETTER THAN NO REPLY AT ALL!!

    APPLE PLEASE HELP US

How about turning off the caps lock. It not only makes your post harder to read but all caps indicates your are yelling and is considered by many rude.

As for getting a response from Apple on this site its not going to happen. If you want a response take your phone into an Apple store or an Authorized Apple Service Provder and have the phone examined.

What is the latest on this problem, is it still happening?

In mid Dec 2014 I had a rash of blue screens on my 1 year old iPad 2 after updating to iOS 8.1.2. Without really knowing what I have done to fix it itl has been OK for about three weeks, so hopefully it won't recur. My only clue is that I went to Settings - i Cloud and turned off Synch for all apps, also deleted unwanted games.

Is it possible that Apple could have done an automatic update while online without my knowledge? I have this nagging doubt that it will remain OK.

Apple have been quiet on this problem but by the large number of posters on the subject it has been pretty widespread, surely there must be a fix.

same problem with iphone 5s after ios 8 update, apple should allow downgrade to 7 or even 6 for temporary solution.

afraid to do any update in the future anymore, will stay outdated, won't fix until it's broken!

Has your problem gone away?  I agree with your concern about installing updates until they have stood the test of time.

So far so good with my Ipad since mid December but we don't give it a demanding time. My wife likes to use it for games (mostly Candy Crush) plus internet use via wi-fi, also storage of family pictures and occasional emails.

If I had to make a guess as to the cause of the BSOD I would say that it's tied up with iCloud and synch for all apps. Try going to Settings > iCloud and turn off the synch buttons for apps. It could be that there are certain apps that iOS 8.1.2 doesn't like. We do not use iTunes and as far as we are concerned it is an unnecessary feature, but it should be available on an expensive tablet.

Apple really need to get their act together before their good reputation melts away, brand loyalty will only stand so much.

Add me to the list of people having a problem with the blue screen of death. My phone is 6 weeks out of warranty.  I went into the apple store on Friday and was told it was a hardware problem and that it would cost me $269 to replace the phone and that will only give me a 90 day warranty.  I'm currently trying to limp along and continue to use the phone but the problem seems to be getting worse. Today the phone went into panic mode (as the guy at the Genius Bar called it) about 8 times. Very frustrating. I'm really hoping someone can come up with some kind of fix but I'm not holding my breath.

If Apple determined you had a hardware problem then the only fix is to replace the phone. Software will not fix broken hardware.

Just seems odd to me that these "hardware" problems started 1 week after I finally updated to IOS 8. I was purposely avoiding doing that because I had heard stories from others that were having problems.

I also have the iphone 5s and am experiencing this issue.  My phone is out of warranty by about 1.5 months.  I went into the apple store and was told the same thing by the technician that many of you have posted.  $269 for a replacement phone with a warranty of 3 months.  The person who was helping me initially thought it was a software problem and specifically told me "Apple products do not have a blue screen of death.  That is a PC thing."  I am sorry, but as far as I can tell, my screen turns blue and the phone shuts down...that is a blue screen of death.  The same thing happened to my fiance's iphone 5s and it happened with increasing frequency until it completely died.  Call it what you want, but it is evidence of some type of failure.

If it is a software problem, then it's Apple's fault and they should take care of it.

If it's a hardware problem, then Apple is producing a poor quality product that costs $600 to last just over a year.  They should also take care of that.

Unfortunately for now, Apple is refusing to acknowledge this issue or take responsibility.  I really hope that the nightly news or viral internet chains will catch wind of this and it will become a big reputation/branding deal so that Apple can no longer make the claim that their products are "high quality and do not experience blue screens of death."  I will try again at the apple store before I try to make a decision about how to move on from here, but I've never loved Apple before and had another bad experience with an ipod years ago...I am starting to fear I will have to jump ship and learn a whole new phone.

I'll update if anything changes and in the mean time if anyone finds out a fix, post it!
