My Mail in Yosemite doesn't work!

I am having problem with my Mail in Yosemite OS, hotmail is fine, only gmail has problem. I can receive emails, but i can send mails with gmail. Every time I try to send an email with my gmail in Mail, it tells that "Cannot send message using the server smtp.gmail.com:(my gmail user name)." it also says "The gmail SMTP connection to server smtp.gmail.com failed."

What should I do? I need to send tons of emails each day, and now i have to write my emails on my iMac, then open it in my iPhone 6 to send emails!

This worked for most of my SMTP servers in the list except one. Regardless, this is a side effect of a deeper problem. Side effects are not the result of mistakes in code but a much larger problem of poor engineering (the software architecture is bad). We have seen this over and over in Mac OS X and especially with Mail. It is unfortunate but Mac OS X might be solid for the IT person who likes to watch the kernel run but for the user, it is a house of cards. This problem exemplifies the issue.

I don't have this exact problem, but I am having a major problem with mail in Yosemite, and this is the only thread I can find. When I open up mail, it says I have over 240,000 + emails that it needs to recover. (I've gone into the two accounts online that flow through this program, and I have more like a little over 100). Next, after I hit "import" (as this is the only way I can seem to attempt at all to get started, it tells me it's going to take 76+ hours to accomplish the import, and then says my "start-up disk" is too full to handle it. Which, after doing diagnostics on my computer, turns out I'm only using a little under half the space available. I am beyond frustrated, as Yosemite is effecting other parts of my system, however, in trying to stay on point, I'm only bringing up the email here.

Thanks. ~ M

Same for problem for me. I can get mail, but not send. I've tried the above fixes, none have worked, and am done wasting time with it. I can't send with my .me account either, but I rarely use it. This started with the last Yosemite update, so I am hoping Apple will address the problem in the future. Meanwhile, I'm now using gmail directly from the browser, which works fine. End of frustration.

I had the same problem but spoke to Apple via their support page and as it was a result of a recent software upgrade, i.e. Yosemite, there was no charge. All my outgoing mail servers were off line so they removed them all, re input them and changed the port number and the problem was solved. That was some 2 weeks ago and have not had a problem since.

Another of the 'death by a thousand cuts'. There are many good people working for Apple, and there are many useless ones. Unfortunately the useless ones appear to be getting the upper hand. Mail is not rocket science and the Mail app does not need geniuses to write and maintain it. I wish Apple would spend more time tidying up and less time slapping fresh coats of paint on everything.
