    Is *there* a command known, or what can I do before  calling for an install- disk from Apple?

    About the best bet is to see if Apple can supply you with a suitable install restore

    DVD for the computer model, by product Serial Number and model information;

    there usually is a fee when a match of suitable media on install disc is found...

    As part of a troubleshooting effort, you may be able to use a second Mac that may

    be (or not) used in Target Disk Mode, for a variety of possible purposes; if the

    optical drive in the computer in question may need a cleaning or is defective, the

    media disc won't read correctly if at all. So if that is the case, another method of

    attempting to access the computer's hard disk drive may be open via Target Disk

    and a FireWire cable, with a second Mac computer equipped with FW ports.

    If the incorrect install disc were used, usually the disc would not work. If a disc

    from another model PowerBook were used, it may or may not be seen as valid.

    There just are too many unknowns in almost every aspect of the situation you have

    to suggest one plausible course of action. If you are attempting to restore this old

    of a Mac computer with vintage/obsolete Mac OS, for daily use, a variety of other

    potential issues would also need to be addressed. Among them, current browsers.

    If correct install-restore DVD is clean, w/o defects, then an issue may be in the optical

    drive itself; it can be dusty or damaged. The hard disk drive may also be worn out.

    In any event...

    Good luck & happy computing!
