Q: iPhone photo edits lost after import / sync to aperture ?

Two problems I noticed while syncing photos to my  iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1:

First, while importing, Aperture told me it could not recognise several items (Unsupported items) so I had to save them in a separate folder in my mac. Those items are files with the name of the photo plus an "AEE" extension. (say IMG_2340.AEE ) and I assume those files are the edits I have made to my photos.

Then I noticed that synced photos do not have the original edits. So the photo goes to the mac and looses the edits plus when the photo is back to the iphone via iTunes sync all the changes are gone. Some pictures appear duplicate also. (I'm still trying to find the logic of the error )

It looks more like a bug but I just wanted to know if someone else is experiencing this.

  • How could I re-link the AEE files to the original photos and preserve the edits after sync?

Here the content of one of the AEE files I mentioned:

Glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing this issue.  Thought I was losing my mind.

So Apple has completely missed the boat on their own device support on this one.   I wasted an hour on Apple Support today talking to support technicians completely unaware of this issue.    The full blown summary is that they are using this .AAE  extension which isn't compatible with any of their own programs.   Correct me if I'm wrong.    This has caused so many problems they don't even know how to address them in  iPhoto,  photos,  aperture,  and Image Grab.

They aren't compatible with Final Cut Pro, but you can take them in through the back door by going through iMovie Library and then transfer them over.  Which is complete Horse Manure.   They need a clean path from the phone to iPhoto or Photos that allows you to transfer the files into Final Cut Pro without crashing.

If they need a real engineer to figure it out then Tim Cook needs to try it himself and see what a fricken pain this is for anyone who is serious about using their phone video for professional use.

I was going nuts over this as well.

Finally here is a workaround as I found it as of now (OSX El Capitan 10.11.6 (15G31)):

    1. Turn off Photostream on the stationary Mac

    2. Import from IO device to Mac Photos app over USB cable

    3. Sync photos back to phone using iTunes (sic)

This way it preserves my edits when importing into the Mac Photos app, while still there is a backup in the stream of the original photo. At least for now.

I can only guess this all is because of Marketing want's you to sell iCloud Media Library, something totally unaffordable once you have a larger Photo collection on hand. I would not want to pay 10 bucks a month for something that will not work when abroad and I have on local backup and on file anyway.
