Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
Used Apple Pay for a $4 purchase on my Citibank debit card and had to enter my pin on the terminal in order to complete the transaction.
Can anyone explain why ? I thought one of the the main points was of NFC payments was to make PINs redundant.
True, How many times was your account Charged? For me it also differed from store to store (or cashier maybe?) wether it asked for pin or not

Same thing at Whole Foods for me. Seemed ridiculous. I'm not sure if it's Whole Foods or Wells Fargo that makes this happen. Somebody doesn't get it. Could it be a problem with Apple Pay itself?
Well, just tried using Apple Pay at MacDonalds using the same Citibank debit card and it went straight through - no PIN required. Exactly as I was expecting it to work. I did chat with a Citibank rep this morning who told me that it's a security thing and the PIN request shouldn't happen again after the first transaction but I didn't get the feeling she really knew what she was talking about. Guess I need to go back to Walgreens to try it again.
And in response to earlier question, I was only charged once for the transaction at Walgreens that required a PIN entry - although I have seen many reports of folks being charged twice.
Well, that’s been the problem all along with existing tap-to-pay systems. “Somebody doesn’t get it” is appropriate. I doubt it is Pay itself.
its something that they must be working on and my guess is by early 2015 everything will be worked out...remember some banks aren't on board yet so it can take time to fully enjoy apple pay 🙂
I had the same experience, plus I had to response to the other questions concerning 'is the amount correct', 'cash back', etc. I could have checked out just as fast using only my credit debt card. I guess, if I had left my wallet at home & only had my iPhone with me, then the Apple Pay would have been my saving grace!
I used Apple Pay at Walgreens on Wednesday no pin number required. I did have decide if I wanted cash back and verify transaction. Today I used Apple Pay again at the same Walgreens and I had to enter my pin. I do think it must be a cashier thing, but I'm not sure. Just glad it worked.
I believe it's just a security measure.
I don't know for sure but it could depend on if the cashier enters it as a debit or credit transaction. Most debit cards can also be run as a credit card and then the system isn't going to look for a pin. Some systems may just prompt for the pin because it sees it as a debit transaction.
I think it also may depend on the store whether they offer cash back or not. If so, the terminal requires the customer to input the pin in order to respond to the cash back option.
