Q: password

I've tried to manage my Apple ID account online but it says my password is not strong enough and won't let me get in until I have created a stronger one.

The password I already have is accepted by iTunes, App Shop, this Community, etc.

The 9 character password contains a mix of upper and lower case alphabetic letters and a  number of numeric digits; the letters do not make up a word that is in any dictionary I have seen (although I expect someone would be able to make an anagram from a subset of them).

What more do I need to do?

It is difficult enough to remember all my passwords as it is, any more meaningless and I will have to resort to writing it down - is that what Apple are trying to make me do? Why do they not want me to have a password I can remember? Why can I not use my existing password that I know works?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 6.1.3

I'm not after a dirty workaround, I want an official spokesperson from Apple to explain  their security policy.

How can they be contacted online?

What do you mean ? These are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple nor iTunes Support.

That email reply shows up in the Community, but the Reply button there does not work.

Anyway, that did not answer my question.

My existing password satisfies all of the conditions there, and it works in most places, but Apple will not let me use it for managing my account.

    WHY NOT ?

And why do I have to use email to get my messages onto the Community Board?

What happens when you click the 'reply' button on these forums ? Do you get any error messages ? Have you tried a different browser ? I have no problems using Safari, Firefox and Opera to post on here.

As to 'why not' (and there is no need to shout, unless you don't want people to try and help), and you are sure that you password meets the requirements, then contact iTunes Support :  http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/

Please pass this to King_Penguin as the Apple site won't let me.

Thanks for your restrained reply. Apologies for shouting at you, it wasn't personal.

What happens when you click the 'reply' button on these forums ?

    Answer - absolutely nothing

This forum software has a thing that it logs you out after a period of inactivity, so that would be one explanation.

As for the forums: you get email notifications of any thread you're involved in; that is not communicating with Apple staff though as it's kust an automated process. You don't need to use that link - you can access these forums via your browser. And, as has already been said: we are all users like you volunteering our time to help other users.

So, if you want Apple to respond, you need to contact Apple. You won't get a response from them here.

Please pass this reply on to babowa, as the Apple website won't let me Reply directly.

only to read them - I can't Reply directly to anything.

    Any ideas?

What browser are you using ?

I'm aware of an issue with Chrome ('submit' button not always appearing on the feedback pages on here), but there are also a number of other general issues that are affecting these forums since they were moved over to an 'upgraded' version of the software behind them. Have you got a second browser that you could try ?

I only have Safari on the Mac, but I've just tried Firefox on my windows laptop and it works!

So much for Apple all working together! (what does 'upgraded' actually mean?)

At least one thing is now sorted.

How should I contact Apple? Can I do it online, does anyone know? The nearest Apple Shop/ Genius Bar is some considerable distance away.

What I really wanted was to find out how many sign-ins I have on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and any other devices that I no longer use. Would Apple be able to tell me anyway?

The software that these forums run on is provided by a third-party, and a few months ago it was updated to a newer version of their platform - unfortunately that appears to have had a number of side-effects (one being that images that people post can't always be seen by everyone).

Whether they will be able to tell you if your account is still logged in on devices/computers I don't know, though they might be able to. If the account was also used in Settings > iCloud on the device, and Find My iPhone is enabled on them, then you should be able to see them yourself via the 'Find My iPhone' section on http://www.icloud.com

If the device/computer is 'associated' to an account (i.e. iTunes Match or automatic downloads has been used on it, or past purchases have been redownloaded on it) then they should show in the 'manage devices' section of your account on your computer's iTunes : Store > View Account menu option (device/computer association)

You can contact iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

You did reply to me as directly as possible as shown in your post (alan_d to babowa) in these forums. You cannot send me (or anyone unless they've published their email address which is not recommended in the ToU) an email directly. These are forums where you simply post a question or reply and anyone can answer as it is an open forum. The email are automated notifications which you can subscribe to or not (as you prefer).

I actually passed on that reply via the automated(?) email response from Apple.

The Reply button on the Apple Community website does not work under Safari on my Mac, but it does seem to work via Firefox on my Windows laptop!

So, to discuss Apple-related issues I have to revert to Windows - no real surprise there.

As I said to King_Penguin, that seems to have sorted out at least one problem.

My last serious question is why does Apple not want me to use a password that complies with every one of their requirements?

And how can I contact Apple online? Maybe I can't.
