Absolutely untrue. X11R7 leans toward forced upgrades and is helping to force use of Wayland ultimately we will see.

X.org has little to do with XFree86 X11R6, except that X11R6's code is used to purpetrate the intentful incompatibilities that are beneficial to many actors in that party. such as:

Such as a default of mis-ordered Xtrans packets for %100 absolutely no reason except to damage X11 compatibility. (new software could have selected the non-default non-intuitive option "for speed", but instead it is forced that all old software be incompatible and die if not rewritten - rewritten by whom is a question i'll not entertain so i am not too bold today). (xwhat? X (and the old X in OS/X, are network transparent, meaning a desktop on any computer can be seen on a different computer LIVE - and efficiently too - without any extra software - just a starup switch when launching app, been that way since the 1980's - UNTIL x.org began hacking it OUT with excuse "it confused developers")

I have XQuartz installed on my Sierra system, and it works fine. However, I do not have 'xgterm'. I have

/opt/X11/bin/koi8rxterm

/opt/X11/bin/uxterm

/opt/X11/bin/xterm

Are you running 'xgterm' on a remote system and sending the display back to your Mac?

Or did you build your own 'xgterm'

"ln: /usr/X11R6: Operation not permitted"

On my system X11R6 is a symlink

X11R6 -> /opt/X11

All my X11 binaries are in /opt/X11/bin

Note: I do not often use xterm, as when I'm working with remote systems, I just ssh to the remote system via Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal (or iTerm2). My use of XQuartz has been to export gvimdiff's back from remote systems to my Mac for display, and the company I work for uses an X11 when there are code merge differences that need to be resolved. But if I can go direct, I prefer doing that, or using a RealVNC session to the remote system.

X11 and X11R6 are the names of the windowing software that XQuartz was written to be compatible with. These are actually ancient version numbers that will likely not change (there will be no X12 and X11R7 has not experienced widespread adoption). If you want to learn more, head on over to www.x.org.

If the "ln" command said "File exists", then you may already have stuff in the right place. If XQuartz still isn't working for you, and you aren't comfortable trying to compare and reconcile differences in the contents of /opt/X11, /usr/X11, and /usr/X11R6, then my recommendation would be to uninstall XQuartz, make sure all 3 of those directories are gone, and then reinstall XQuartz from scratch.
