Q: iPhone calling from Mac not working

iPhone continuity calling works from my iPad but not my Mac.  Yosemite 10.10.  iPhone 5 with iOS 8.1  Using same Apple ID, everything turned on in FaceTime and iPhone per instructions.  Both on the same Wi-Fi network

 

Get this message: IPHONE NOT AVAILABLE,  your iPhone and Mac must be on the same Wi-Fi network.

 

They are on the same network.

    If you have FaceTime closed when you make the call, you can't get the FaceTime window during an active call.

    I found an alternative resolution by using the keyboard number keys during the call  (intuitive, but not if you are used to Skype or other VoIP clients that give you graphic keypad).    The graphic keypad would be best, but until then a few lines in the users guide telling folks the keyboard keys work during a call for generating DTMF tones wouldn't hurt.

    There is this.... i've used it all day and it seems solid.  needs a few updates though.

    Yeah..it is different and that's my problem.  The middle section on your screenshot where you can enable iPhone cellular calls is completely missing.  I am using a 27" mid 2011 iMac, i7.  This works on my wife's 2007 MBP--shows the mid section on the pref and she has it enabled.  I think my installation of FaceTime is just FUBAR and I am going to try to reinstall the OS.

    FUBAR.....LMAO! haven't heard that in ages.  Makes me laugh.

    What kind of router do you have?

     

    I had the same problem (not with continuity, but phone calls) with my iphone 5 and MBP (Late 2011).

     

     

    You have to adjust the ip allocation of your mpb to match your iphone within your router configuration web page.

    Hi guys. Just thought id throw in my fix, read the word firewall in this thread and a light bulb lit up.

     

    im using iphone and ipad combo, texts was working a treat but calls would always fail and id get an error message saying ipad and iphone need to be on the same wifi network.....even tho they are.

     

    I fixed this by getting into my router setting, this usually involves typing your routers ip into a browser then logging in (you may have to google your routers login most are simple ie user:admin pass:admin)

     

    Settings > advanced > firewall > disable

     

    This will vary from router to router but if it has an inbuilt firewall disable it, most are useless and outdated anywho

     

     

    instantly fixed my calls and handoff

    ive not seen this suggestion yet so hope it helps someone

    I simply turned off the Firewall on the iMac – and I could start making calls from it!

    If you want to call a number with your Mac without clicking on a number such as in contacts, you can do as "frankfrommadera" suggests and type it in to FaceTime. But once the call is made and you need to enter responses to automated questions (i.e. "enter your account number"), then you can just use your Mac keyboard to type in the numbers and characters such as "#".  I'm not sure if this is new to the most recent Yosemite Beta, as I am running Version 10.10.1 (14B17), because I thought I tried this in a previous version and it didn't work. Maybe someone else can test this on the current public release of Yosemite?

     

    Update: I apologize, I replied before seeing that you had already found this solution in a later post...

    I tried two things, first (on the iPhone) I went to settings, on wi-fi, then pressed on "i" on my network. You will then see ip address, subnet mask, etc, went to the bottom and pressed "Renew Lease", this "solution" worked for a few minutes only.

    Second, on that same place, on the last line that says "Client ID" I put my MacBook IP address, lo and behold my Mac always connects to my iPhone and I'm able to call landlines.

    If you turn off Mac or iPhone when you switch them back on, it's probable that the Mac IP had changed and when trying to place calls the response will be the "both Mac and iPhone must be on same network" error.

    Solution, on the Mac, press the wi-fi thing on the top right next to volume setting, open network preferences and on status it will say the IP "192.xxx.x.x"

    Then on your iPhone you put that IP on cliente ID and the bloody thing will work.

    One user switched from DHCP to STATIC, I guess then you would only have to put the IP once and it wouldn't change. I don't know how to do that, and security wise I'm not sure if there's any good from it. Hope it helps.

    This worked for me. A prompt came up on the MacBook Air and wanted to know if I wanted to associate my phone number with it. All is good now. THANKS keltong!

    My iMac and iPhone could share SMS messages, but when trying to make a phone call or receive a phone call on the iMac,   it would try for about 5 seconds before saying "call failed."   I tried turning on and off the iPhone's Settings>FaceTime>FaceTime as suggested and that reset FaceTime on the iPhone.  Viola, phone calls on the iMac now connect.  (2009 iMac, iPhone 6+).  Thanks for the tip!

    Hi

     

    Don't need to change any wifi settings at all

     

    Just turn FaceTime off on your iPhone and mac then just sign in again worked a treat. If you look at the FaceTime caller id on the mac and iPhone your phone number must be ticked! As I noticed on both the mac and the iPhone my phone number wasn't present. But after turning them both back on my phone number was back and ticked as my caller id.

    One note I will make is that some VPN clients block you from accessing your local network. For example my workplace chooses to use Cisco AnyConnect which is one heck of a PITA crappy VPN solution that blocks you from printing to wireless printers, stops airport speakers working, time capsule goes missing, and; you lose your ability to make/receive calls on your mac.

     

    I really hate Cisco AnyConnect!
