I'm done.  It's either an android or a surface pro next.  I was going to buy an ipad air 2, but this is the second time in a month they've released an update that has hosed users.  My iPad 2 is stuck at the apple logo like so many others after yet another botched update.

Anyone have a preference between the android and surface pro tablets?

Same here. Tried update to IOS 8.1 on iPad2. Froze during update. Reboot has stupid iTunes logo with connect arrow. iPad IS connected.

Come on Apple, FIX THIS NOW. All I have is a brick right now. I got rid of my iPhone and unless Apple fixes this, it will be the last Apple product I ever buy.

And I thought Micro$oft was horrible. Apple is make them look good.

I've got the same problem (stuck on black screen with white logo for a while and nothing happens). I was just chatting with Apple support and he/she suggested that I plugged the ipad in a computer to see if it would get in the forced recovery mode. It did not help (surprise, surprise).

Last option before heading to an Apple Store is to drain the battery and plug it in a computer to see it the recovery mode will kick in.

I Thought I would post with my experience. I had the same issues as everyone else and frankly thought my iPad was done for. I was trying to plug it into my computer to restore from iTunes as a last resort my computer refused to recognize i had plugged anything in. Since I had done the update on a full battery, I was pretty ******.

I was playing around with it and what I ended up doing was holding the power button and home button down at the same time. the screen eventually went dark, and I thought the apple logo would cycle back on like always, but nothing happened. I didn't let go of the two buttons. TheN eventually I realized the iPad had turned off. I let go then I pressed the power button again. The apple logo appeared, but it booted up normally this time.

MY iPad is now running on ios8.1 and appears to work fine. I have no idea what I did, or why it worked. but I thought I would share in case it helps anyone else. I didn't have to restore, though I'm terrified to turn my iPad off again.

IM typing this on my iPad bTw. This predictive keyboard is just crap, isn't it?

I am baffled at how Apple thought iOS 8/8.1 upgrades were suitable for ipad 2 and iphone 4s? I tested the upgrade on my iPhone 4S. iOS 8 worked but with horrible battery drain and laggy touch interface. I thought iOS 8.1 would fix those, instead it "bricked" the phone. My 4S is now stuck in recovery mode. This is no fault of mine and I blame Apple for making my phone useless.

When my iPad Air 1 froze, I pressed and held down the Home and Power button at the same time till the iPad restarted. This then enable the device to restart and iOS 8.1 was installed.  That worked for me.

SO I did what another user suggested, hold hard reset for a minute and let the apple logo come on and off a few times. Now it works, thank goodness, or I was going to head over to the apple store and started throwing rocks at the window ))

    Hi Ivizzle ...

This approach worked for me as well ... When my wife's iPad2 bricked early this morning, I got the scare of my life ... Her iPad2 is her life ... and she refused to updated earlier to avoid just this kind of thing ...

Your post is a real life saver for her and me as well ... Well ... More for me actually ...

    Thanx a lot ...

    Dzul

    p/s : I'm using my wife's account ...

It took me four hours. But luckily, I had backed up to the iCloud. I kept holding and pushing buttons until I got rid of the annoying connect the USB port to the iPad while it was connected. Ultimately, from what I can figure out, everything was wiped out on the iPad, the update to 8.1 occurred and then my iCloud backed up was restored. I have no idea of this will work with someone without a backup!

It would seem at this point, Apple itself would address this problem instead of us all trying to find our way through the fog on a problem Apple created with its update.

I am so fed up with Apple.  My Ipad 2 will be my last IOS device.  I loved it up until the last few updates.  And then 8.0 seemed to kill it for me.  Made it almost useless.

8.1 came out and I figured...What is there to lose?  I tried it and this update has killed it completely.  Stuck on the Apple logo.

Now I have and Iphone which is junk and and Ipad.  Looks like I'll be buying a new tablet.  Hello Windows / Android.
