Q: Call failed Phone call continuity OS X Yosemite

Here's my situation:

- iPhone 5s (iOS 8.1) with AT&T and Macbook Air (mid 2012, OS X Yosemite)

- Handoff works great

- Phone call Continuity does not work

- If I try to make a call from my macbook air (e.g. contacts card with little blue phone icon [not face time]), the little black box for FaceTime phone calls on the top right appears and says "(Contact Name) ..... Using Your iPhone" with the option for Video (grayed out), Mute, and End. But almost immediately afterwards will say Call Failed with the option to Close or Retry

- I had an incoming call once that went to my macbook air, I actually didn't answer because it was inconvenient to at the time. Although I've had other incoming calls on my iphone, none went to my macbook air except that one time. Weird.

- It seems that Phone call Continuity is established and wants to function up until actually initiating a call.

- Typical settings are all correct, to my knowledge (i.e. FaceTime, iCloud, Apple ID, Allow iPhone Cellular Calls, WiFi network) and have tried signing in/out, restarting, and in different chronological order.

- Called Apple Support, spoke to 3 different people, two of which knew very little about Apple (e.g. asked me if my device was a 'Mac Air', asked me to turn on airplane mode on my laptop device, asked me to turn on airplane mode on the iPhone which I was using to call him....). The third asked me to wait for iOS 8.1, which hasn't helped.

- Went to Apple Store, they couldn't figure it out and said they'd elevate it to an Apple Engineer and I was suppose to hear back today, but have not.

- I've gone through so many solutions that have worked for other people, mostly including ensuring the "typical" settings are enabled. I've also tried 'allow incoming connections' inside the Firewall. At one point I thought it was my AT&T router that didn't support Universal Plug and Play (UPNP), but I went to the Apple Store and phone calls didn't work there either.

I'm basically at a wits end. This is nuts. Over a function that I probably won't use a lot. But it's the principal of the thing, it's supposed to work! Hahah. I'm glad I'm not alone in this problem. Hopefully a fix can be found.

    Just made a weird observation.

I had been using Phone calling from my Contacts all through the day, and when I went to call a restaurant for takeout, nothing happened. I tried a few other numbers in Contacts, some worked some didn't work. I then went back to the restaurant contact, which was still not working, I added a new phone number listing in the contact, then copy/pasted the original number in to it, and now that number dials properly.

Will have to explore this a little more, but it could relate to why it's working for some but not others.

I tried what you said and saw something similar.

Trying to call some contacts will initiate the FaceTime black box at the top right, but the call will fail. For other contacts, nothing happens after I click on the blue phone call icon, even though it is definitely available and clickable. On the Maps app, I looked up best buy and tried to call and the black box came up but the call failed. I then created a new contact card and copy/pasted the phone number for best buy and nothing would happen when I tried to call from that contact card. I tried playing around with deleting the area code, or the +1 at the front, or the parenthesis, or the phone category inside the contact card, but it wouldn't change the fact that nothing would happen when trying to call.

Really weird. It's similar to what you described, instead I can't actually get the phone call to go through, only the black box appears and will say 'call failed'. Maybe it's a related but separate issue?

I'm noticing that even when on my home network with the same SSID broadcast over both 5 and 2.4 gHz, the phone calls don't work even if other continuity features do work. However, if I force both mid-2014 rMBP and iPhone 5S 8.1 (both clean installs) onto the same band, phone continuity works

Ahhh, hopefully that works for others but it didn't apply to me, frustratingly enough.

I was excited to try it, but come to find out my router only supports 2.4GHz anyways. At least I think so. I had to do a quick search on what that was and where to find it, and looked on my router's IP address website and couldn't find any other mode besides 2.4Ghz, looked up my router's specification data sheet and sure enough it only supports 2.4GHz. My router is supplied by AT&T, it's a Pace 5031NV make and model.

The Apple Store Genius people and I also couldn't figure out the problem while at the Apple Store using their WiFi connection. Who knows what their settings were, but I'd imagine they have better routers and it also makes at least two WiFi locations where I couldn't get phone calls to work.

So I did the same with the contacts. I noticed if I clicked the blue phone icon in contacts it would not do anything, The number had +1(XXX) XXX-XXXX, I removed the + and tried again and the black box now shows up, but it still says call failed. I'm on a MBA13 Mid-2012. Everything else works including SMS in messages, even facetime. Just can't make calls and cannot connect to the personal hotspot unless I turn it on with the phone first.

Whose cell phone service do you have? I don't use a +1 for any numbers.

All of my contacts have the +1 in front for some reason.. I use Gmail contacts and Verizon is my provider.

I use Contacts, but when I dial my cell phone, AT&T, I never use a 1 in front of the area code.

the plus is an international format, it shouldn't matter. I also reset my network settings on my phone with no luck.

Sorry about that, it definitely seems like Apple's claims about this feature working smoothly is way overblown. This is definitely released half baked and the souffle fell

I believe I have found an issue.

MacBook Air works fine to make and receive calls via the iPhone.

Mac Mini would not. Initially it claimed not on same wifi network so, I enabled wifi in the MM (it is plugged into router with cable). This changed behaviour to "call failed" so I disabled the wired connection so that the wifi was being used for the internet connection. Now it works! Conclusion is that, for it to work, you must be using wifi for your internet connection.

The +1 definitely shows up when you search a store/location on Apple Maps.

For us in the US calling a US number, it's just a redundant number that tells the phone it's dialing a North American number. It's absolutely not needed. I never use +1 when I add my contacts on my phone and none of my contacts ever had the +1. But it does show up on Apple Maps locations, probably just to consider that Apple is used across the world.

It's weird that the black box shows up when you remove the +1, like you said it shouldn't make a difference. Ughhh

I was able to resolve the repeated "Call Failed" error by toggling "iPhone Cellular Calls" on my iPhone on/off.

Mattstick - I have attempted that fix; however it has not worked for me.

All - I recently attempted to temp disable the iMac Firewall then then test the phone call. Still did not work. Again, I can successfully make/receive calls using my iPhone 5C + Macbook, but cannot make/receive calls using my iPhone 5C + iMac. All settings are on the iMac & Macbook are identical. I am also not running any antivirus/security software on either device.
