Problems using 'Back to my Mac' with Yosemite

At home I have two Macs, an iMac and a MacBook, both running Mavericks. At work I use a MacBook Pro, also running Mavericks, and when I'm out I use a MacBook Air that was running developer preview of Yosemite.

My home iMac has now been upgraded to Yosemite. However when at work using my Mavericks MacBook I can no longer use 'Back to my Mac' to screen share back to my iMac, I get "Connection failed to "Conor's iMac", but I can still connect to the MacBook at home running Mavericks. I've also tried connecting to both Macs at home using my Yosemite MacBook Air but I get the same error.

I can screen share between all Mac when they are on the local network, but as soon as I'm using iCloud to screen share the only connection I can make is between Macs running Mavericks. It's almost as if 'Back to my Mac' via iCloud is broken in Yosemite.

I've tried disabling and reenabling 'Back to my Mac', signing out of iCloud entirely and then logging in again, but nothing I've tried so far will allow me to use iCloud to screen share between two Yosemite Macs.

Has anyone else seen this issue, or have any suggestions?

I did some playing around with the guest network feature on my Wi-Fi router last night. This allows devices connected to the guest network to access the internet but prevents them accessing my local LAN. This forces BTMM to use iCloud to 'find' the Mac I want to connect to. This means I can recreate the issue while still having both Macs in front of me.

I did briefly get Screen Share via BTTM to work last night. Not sure what resolved it, all I did was remove alias from my local user accounts and disable/enable BTTM in the iCloud settings panel. However, now that I'm at work this morning I can't see any of my Yosemite Macs in the shared section of the Finder sidebar.

I have two Macs at home (one Yosemite, one Mavericks) and two Macs at work (one Yosemite, one Mavericks). Right now all I can see in Finder are the Mavericks Mac, the Yosemite Macs seem to have disappeared (even on the LAN). BTTM worked very well for me when I was using Mavericks, but with Yosemite I've gone from 'Connection Failed' to not being able to attempt a connection. I'm only one person but it seems like the iCloud/BTTM on Yosemite is in a state of flux

I've logged a case with Apple and they're phoning me this morning, but I'm not sure what we'll achieve if I can't even see the Yosemite Macs at the moment.

I'm having all sorts of BTMM issues as well. Some of my computers are now showing up twice with a number appended to the name...so I'll see "Computer" and "Computer (2)". When i connect i even notice the computer's name has been changed in the sharing settings. If i change it back it only stays for a while before the number is appended again.

Brian,

I have the multiple computer names issue as well, but in my case I was up to (7)! Apparently the problem is the "Wake for Network Access' option in energy settings. When the Mac wakes up to check whatever it checks it sees a 'ghost' of itself (sometime it even conflicts with it's own IP address) and increments the Mac's name to avoid conflicts. I've turned it off but not for long enough to be sure the problem is resolved.

As for BTMM, I'm increasingly convinced the Yosemite BTMM issue is not just me, it's a real problem. I've had several calls with Apple support, performed data capture on two of my Macs (one Mavericks, one Yosemite) while trying to remotely connect to my Yosemite iMac at home. I'm told my case has been escalated to the Yosemite support team but it may be a few days before I hear from them. Here's hoping!

Alex,

as the others suggested, the knowledge base article you linked to made no difference to my issue. When attempting to connect to a Yosemite Mac it's seems clear that Back To My Mac is currently broken.

Given the number of posts regarding this issue it's not just me experiencing the issue, at this stage the Yosemite team must be aware there is an issue. Perhaps you could contact them and find out when they expect to to have a fix.

Conor.
