Safari DNS problem in Yosemite? Works, then slow death...

Safari 8.0 + Yosemite seems to have a problem. It will work for a while, then begins to fail to load and is unable to resolve top level domains - "Safari Can't Find the Server ... [e.g. apple.com]"

Restarting Safari often resolves the issue for a while (minutes, hours?), then performance deteriorates until it finally gives up and generates the error. Chrome, on the same machine, does not suffer this problem.

17" Intel iMac, Safari 8.0, Yosemite, Exede broadband (satellite).

Anybody else see this issue and/or have a solution?

If you want Apple to do more, you should use the feedback to them. This here is not Apple.

As you are well aware of the sites that you visit, Chrome is not such a risk for you, and your mac certainly has power enough that the resources spill of Chrome can easily be handled.

You should not be so "aggrevated" about a good advice over a browser choice. I did not say anything like you must, only said some generalities about 4 browsers. Your choice to make.

Since the latest instalments of Safari and Yosemite there has been a vast improvement BUT if I clear ALL history and website data I get problems again with Safari pages not opening. I have Opera installed and it follows Safari at that time and won't open pages. I can clear the last hour, I can clear todays history.... and even today and yesterday but "all history and website data" and I loose connectivity.

Then I have to leave the computer for about an hour and connectivity hesitently returns.

I'm absolutely no computer expert and this might bear no relation at all to the problems of others.... but I hope it helps someone though.

The ipv6 solution posted by Ron2you fixed the problem for me (caveat: "for the moment"). For a user not well versed in the technicalities of DNS and ipv4/ipv6, this is a confounding problem. It is a problem that is obviously affecting many users, one with a simple solution that Apple Support should have knowledge of, and one that they should be ready and willing to provide. For me it was a matter of scouring the net for many weeks until I finally happened to key in the right search string to stumble upon this thread. In the meantime, I've been contemplating my switch back to Windows PCs. Come Windows 10, I suspect I'm out of here. Ridiculous.

I'm glad others are commenting on this. I have been dealing with beach balls in the address bar, and especially on certain sites where you have to type text it gets stuck for 5 - 16 seconds. I added google DNS to my modem/router and it seems to be a bit better but still randomly gets slow.

I was also having issues with iMessage randomly dropping connected jabber accounts. Went thru the whole "make sure your timezone is set to auto" remarks. It was a fresh build on a 2013 Mac Pro 6-core.

I started to wonder if iCloud Sync (favs, usernames/passwords) among other items were to blame here too. It (for me) is the only common link between putting a fresh build of Yosemite on the system, then putting my iCloud user/pass in. But its random regardless. Only other commonality in my Safari installations is Adblock.

I have waited for a solution for ages. The last update did nothing for me. Some of the advice on here is way above my level of knowledge IPv6, DNS etc. I'm no programmer just a user and lover of Apple products (normally).

Tried finding info on the Apple website, tried getting through to UK support. Nothing was easy, so the best solution is to switch browser until this is sorted. Well, as of today I figured the fix for myself and its simple. I have stopped using Safari and now use Mozilla Firefox, it has similar features to Safari and works without any problem as long as I don't open Safari. I tried Google Chrome but for some reason it doesn't support Silverlight anymore and to be honest I don't really like the interface very much.

Safari was my preferred browser but until Apple workout a solution to this problem, its simply a product on my Mac that doesn't work properly. I didn't pay over £1,000 for a computer to use a browser that doesn't work properly and causes me to restart my Mac when it freezes.

I ran into this issue which kinda took a good part of saturday away thus want to make sure I type this out here for someone else who runs into this and can save some time. I was experiencing this issue on Safari, Firefox and Chrome with OS X Yosemite / 10.10.1 - some websites would open and others wouldn't. The fix that worked for me was this:

1. Goto System Preferences > Network > WiFi > Advanced > TCP/IP

"configureIPv4" needs to be set to "Using DHCP"

"configureIPv6" needs to be set to "Link-Local only"

click "OK"

See screenshot below:

2. Goto the "DNS" tab and add an IP addresses for the DNS service you think is reliable and fast. I went with Google's DNS so used

'"8.8.8.8" and "8.8.4.4" and then click "OK"

See screenshot below:

3. Get out of System Preferences

4. "Logout" from your account on your Mac and log back in

5. The problem should be fixed.
