Q: reinstall original operating osx disc?

hi

i have an imac 21.5 mid 2010 with 8gb 1333 mhz ddr3ram . 3.6ghz intel core i3. shipped with mac os 10.6.4. but now running 10.9.5. 500 gb memory.(289gb free)

it is now slow at opening spreadsheets, doesnt like doing two things at once etc...just generally not what it used to be.

i am wondering if i should do an osx reinstall from the dvd that came with it?

i have moved my itunes and video library to another external drive to free up storage thinking that this may have been the problem, but it seems not .

any views or help would be appreciated.

    Eric

thanks so much for your reply and the links i am sure they will be of help when i get some proper time to sit and work through them.

you may or may not be able to tell from the Etrecheck but i went ahead and deleted my hard drive and reinstalled the operating system and reloaded files from external time machine. that all went fine, but i do not think there is much difference in performance. i still get the beachball at the drop of a hat. so it will be very interesting to see if you spot anything obvious in the report.

    regards Andrew
