Calm down.

Yes the red icon is ugly. I agree, so you change it (it can easily be done you know?).

And you want the left menu back? You probably mean the sidebar.

The functionality of the sidebar is limited to managing playlists and content from iDevices. The rest has moved to the topbar als shown in the screenshot below.

In iTunes 11 you had to scroll down to manage playlists. You don't have to do that anymore. Playlists are always directly beside you library-view, while other function stay directly available in the white top bar.

Much better this way...

Alt-command-M opens the mini-player while the main screen of iTunes stays open.

Shift-command-M opens the miniplayer and closes the main screen of iTunes at the same time.

Another way to open the miniplayer:

Hoover over the album-art in the activity-windows in the topbar and two squares appear.

Click on it and the miniplayer appears.

You can switch back from mini-player to the main screen with the Alt-command-m or Shift -command-m of bij closing the miniplayer with the X in the left of the miniplayer.

The green button in the top left corner (red, yellow, green). In the previous OS (prior to Maverick's), you used to be able to push the green button to make it change from the regular player to the mini player. Then in Maverick's they disabled the green button switching and introduced a small button on the top right of the window that made those changes. Sorry I don't have a screen shot of them any more because I've upgraded my iTunes.

Oké, here's the way to activate the miniplayer in iTunes 12 :

Alt-command-M opens the mini-player while the main screen of iTunes stays open.

Shift-command-M opens the miniplayer and closes the main screen of iTunes at the same time.

Another way to open the miniplayer:

Hoover over the album-art in the activity-windows in the topbar and two squares appear.
