I'm trying to update to the new iOS too with an iPhone 6 on a MacBook Pro running Yosemite. I'm up to date on everything... but while trying to update my iPhone 6 iOS, it got stuck during the update with "error 53". It suggested restoring... but then wouldn't let me restore either, giving me Error 53 again. Please help!

I had the same problem on Oct 21. After I tried 5 or 6 times to restore using the instruction when I clicked on 'More Details' button, it was still having error (53) in the middle of recovery. So, yesterday I went to local AT&T store ask for help. The staff there was very helpful. He just upgraded his iPhone 6 to 8.1 without problem using iTune on his MacBook. So he went home got his laptop and tried to restore for me. It failed also. He tried again. It didn't work.

So he helped me calling Apple Support and reported what we had tried. Apple Support agreed that we have done what we could do, they are now sending me a replacement iPhone 6 (the same one I have, 64GB). It is likely hardware problem, there is no way to fix it. I guess we are just a few of lucky ones to get 'bad apples'.

Please note that they would charge your credit card about $835 first to send you a new phone, then you will need to return the broken phone using the repaid package, after they receive it, they will refund the money.

Good luck!

I got error 53 following ios update 8.1.1 on my Verizon iPhone 6 64GB

I tried to get it replaced at a Verizon store - they would not, but informed me I just needed to contact Apple and they would send me a new one.

I contacted Apple for a replacement, gave them my credit card info just in case I failed to send the broken one back. They said I would have one in a couple of business days.

3 days go by and I check Apples support site, input my case number only to find my replacement has been cancelled.

I then call Apple and spend the next hour and a half - seriously that long, waiting for someone to explain why my replacement has not been sent out.

I went through three reps and ended up with Monica who informed me that I needed a proof of purchase before they could send out a replacement.

I could take it into a store and get a replacement, but they couldn't send me one until I sent them a proof of purchase.

Iphone 6 launched in November 2014. It is now December 2014. It is still under 12 month warranty - why the <expletive deleted> do I need to send in a proof of purchase? When I asked this to my rep she had no answer, but sympathized at my frustration.

Very disappointed at the abysmal level of customer service. iOS updates are not much fun when they brick your phone
