Spotlight - How do I access the tool?

I've upgraded(?) to Yosemite on my iMac (24-inch, Early 2008). I cannot access the spot light tool. Clicking on the Spye Glass opens up an add (aka window) for Apple telling me what I can do with Spotlight. Trying to access the tool via the key-board (i.e. command & Space-bar) gives the same result. Going into preferences doesn't appear to provide and answer either. Neither does mac Help. Does any-one have a suggestion? Thanks!

After you've clicked the spyglass tool or done the keyboard shortcut and the window with an add pops up, what happens when you start typing on your keyboard? Just curious.

MAGIC HAPPENS. - My search and results appear on the pop up Window. I do feel like an idiot. THANKS for the tip.
